OH PLEASE!! This cant be normal first grade homework can it?
MATH
Jennifer baked 30 cookies. Her father ate 6 cookies. Her sister ate 5. Her brother ate 4. How many cookies were left?
Will someone please tell me how to help sd actually figure that one out? Do I have her draw 30 cookies (next to impossible) then cross off 6, 5, and then 4 more? Then count whats left?
OR should she draw 6,5, and 4 cookies then more cookies till she gets to 30?
Next question is
Erica had 42 cents. She lost 15 cents. Bill has 10 cents. Do they have enough money to buy a sticker that costs 30 cents?
I havent a clue how to show her how to draw that one out... draw 42 circles then cross off 15, then draw 10 more?
Am I on the right track? I swear I am going to buy her a calculator! These just seem to hard too me... HELP!
Luckily we did the other 5 problems without any trouble, but I just dont know how to show her how to figure this stuff out... I know I am an idiot, but help if ya can please...

WOW!
To me this is a little too advanced for a first grader. My DD is in first also. All we ever get are simple math problems. You know, 5-3=2. Maybe you can talk to the teachers and ask for some suggestions on how to help sd with homework. I have done that several times with DS (4th grade). His teachers have been very helpful and don't count it against him if it isn't done on time. Don't know what else I can say to help. Wish I did. I'm sure I will be going through that soon with DD. Sorry I don't have any other suggestions. I hope someone else can help. Good luck!

Maybe you could substitute coins for the cookies and have her add and take away as needed.

I thought of the coins thing, but the question is at the top of the page with the rest of the page being blank... Leads me to believe they are supposed to "show their work"...
We tried doing tally's but of course for her to count them out that high (30's and 40's) there are several she isnt counting while writting (the old ADHD kicking in I suppose), then to try and cross them off well it isnt even readable how many are left...
It just seems so hard to me... Heck I had trouble with the questions, dang near broke out the calculator! And I am a bookkeeper scary huh?? LOL
Thanks for trying guys! After much screaming, crying etc from both of us we managed, but I am very very irritated with the school... Sd didnt have a clue, and she should at least have an idea how to do the homework ya know...

Each math program is different. We had to move in the middle of this year and my ss went to a more basic math than he had before. He also got saddled with 4 days of homework each week in KINDERGARTEN!!! Those problems seem more like 2nd grade work, but I guess it just depends on the program. Good Luck Catseye!! By the way, it isn't cheating to use the calculator. I am in college for elementary education and had to write papers on why we should use calculators in the classroom, even at that age. ;D

My advise would be to talk to the teacher. There may be a specific way she taught this to the children during class. If you are not doing it the way she did then chances of your child remembering are slim. Any homework assignment that causes that much stress with you and your child should be discussed with the teacher because she should try to help out or make adjustments for you. I am very fortunate that I have teachers that are very helpful when it comes to at home assignments, we have any trouble and they are there for support. Chances are that you weren't the only ones from the class having trouble with this. Carrieskids

Hi My son always had problems with math early on. I had him tutored. The tutor bought him a package of foamy flat squares of different colors. Then she made up a board game on a poster with different math facts & simple directions to move forward or back on the game board. Of course, he loved it & learned from it. As he grew, we used the foam squares for all the other problems like you are talking about. He is a kinetic learner so, I had him count out the squares & take them away as needed in each problem. He had problems with the words in the problems, such as "used", "was given" so adding or subtracting were his biggest hurdle. Hope this helps. BTW - I had to dance with him to have him learn his math facts....that was a fun year:) Whatever works

Carrie has a point. We now have "everyday" math Everyday they have a math sheet that they bring home and I tell him to show me how it was taught and he gets the answer wrong, get's frustrated and I show him how mommy does it. He gets the answer correct. They do send home a packet at the beginning of each lesson that doesn't explain sh**, but it gives the answer. I still write notes to the teacher telling him he learned it my way. And she agrees that it isn't possible for all kids to grasp it like it is being taught now days THey aren't being taught to memorize by rote. I guess that's what it is called. My kids do, and they can pop things off the top of their heads (finally) I know that the teachers might not want it that way, but until they send me to school to tech my kids how to do their homework, I'll do it my way. wait wait, my favorite: add money. Now mind you the money symbol has the first letter of the demonination p=penny n-nickel d=dime q=quarter h=half dollar
They want them to figure out what p p d q n q d p p p equals. OK, ou tell them to add from the highest ot lowest right? Nope, not what I was told. Heck, my kid can barely add 2 digit numbers, let alone trying to figure out how to add 2 digits plus one digit, plus 2 digits, plus one.........

unless it is not alowed use cherioos or raisins count then take away I think they just want them to get the concept of it, its alot faster then haveing them draw and they like playing with food my ds would eat them ;D

oups there I go posting without reading all the way down! ( and I complain when DS does that ! ) anyway if the page is blank then maybe you can use a stamp like crayola markers to make it more interesting if you have any, if not does she need to acualy draw cookies of would just lines do?
