Ughhh that teacher is acting up again......My daughter (10th Grade) has gotten 4 referals in two weeks from the same teacher.......If you are not familiar with referals the teachers gives the student one and they go down and talk to the assistant principal and get punished.....well my daughter has recieved 2 2hour asds (after school detentions) 1 1hour asd and a 4 hour saturday detention........I know it is the assistant principals job to give out punishments, but my daughter has a 4 hour saturday for chewing gum. Does that sound reasonable? Sorry to rant! Thank you, Angela

4 hours for chewing GUM!!! What happens if she does something REALLY bad? That is rediculous(sp). Hey if she acts up at home and you want her out for a while send her to school with gum. I have heard of some stupid things but this "takes the cake" especially when it comes to our kids! Sue I say time to get Rosie's broom and witches hat out

OH I so hate the word referrals! Brings back many nightmares from last year!! My sd in first grade had 22 referrals last year!! ARGH!! And some of them they were kind enough to combine into one, as opposed to each offense being another one..
I remember one that really ticked me off, is sd wouldnt/ more than likely couldnt zip her coat, and teacher pushed issues, sd got mad and ran from teacher.. Yeah so the offensive part was??

Hurricane Kate has collected yet another detention (2 hours after school) for not completing homework. I can understand and accept that. But if she came home with a gum chewing one, I think I'd be emailing teacher, principal, superintendent, etc. to have district policy clarified. I would also ask for the average number of gum referrals given in a school year. I'm one of those parents who actually reads the Student Handbook and takes issue with things that don't make sense. It's not like she was armed and dangerous...I think the principal needs a reality check. Put on your pointy hat and poke him with your broom!

Here's your hat a broom.......I need it back later Mikey's getting one today, I talked to the Principal yesterday and she's going to talk to him. He keeps getting teased at lunch, so when he tries to ignore it, they get in his face and push his buttons. And boom, he'll spit at them because he knows that it'll back the kids off. I can't complain about it this time because that is absolutely disgusting and shouldn't be done, so for now, you can have the hat and broom, I'm finding a good way to get my kid to knock off what he's doing. Did she know that chewing gum was not allowed? Had she been warned about it once? If so, then it's time for some discipline. However, 4 hours on a Saturday does seem excessive for chewing gum. Maybe she'll stop chewing gum after that!!!!
Chewing gum was not allowed at my daughter's school either, but that was an elementary school. I think that's a good policy. I don't know what it is but there's something about chewing gum - especially with your mouth open - that seems sort of dispectful. Plus, I cannot stand to be in the same room with someone who is cracking gum. Drives me nuts.

What, don't like seeing kids chewing like cows That was one of my mom's biggest things. After thinking about it, the 4 hrs is excessive, but if she was warned.. Mikey usually takes about 10 warnings before he realizes something. Kaiti

This school sounds alot like the one I used to work at. Kids would get detention, Saturday school, ISS and OSS for some of the silliest things sometimes! I mean, pick your battles! Unfortunatley, if she knows this is a no-no and does it anyway, she has to be taught rules are for following. Just in a lesser way, IMHO.
Anyway, to touch on something else here. The fact that all these referrals are coming from one teacher points to a problem with the teacher. Is she getting referral from any others? I would address this teacher and find out what she has against your kid. Pointy hat indeed!

Yes, if she was warned then she needs a detention or something that fits the crime but 4 hours on a Sat. seem like a little much and I agree with picking your battles. May be they can do something a little more constructive for punishment like cleaning dried gum from the desks, tables, etc. Sue

If I'm not mistaken, and not trying to sound ignorant, so please correct me if I am wrong: I was told a few years back that kids are NOT allowed to do jobs that would other wise be the janitor's job. Fell under the corpral (sp) punishment thing. And I was just informed by our Principal that sentences we just made a student write as punishment, would also be considered corpral punishment if the parents wanted to push the issue. Sentences along the lines of : I WILL KEEP MY HANDS TO MYSELF.... Are not allowed. The child must render his/her own opinion as to why they should keep their hands to themselves. I've always thought of those sentences as mundane, but I never DID anything to make me write them, so deterent, mundane, kept my butt in line didn't it Oh poo, now if I could just get my kids to stop running in the hall. We can't practice, or there could be a lawsuit Kaiti

Thank you all for your advice.....The assistant principal called my husband today (appartantly Alicia deleted his message yesterday...) and they talked for about 15 minutes......well it turns Alicia has an attitude problem at school (not surprising, i just hope for the school's sake it is not as bad as it is at home)..the ap said she does dumb things in the cafeteria etc., she also skipped a 2hour asd yesterday because "she didn't feel like going" well the ap was nice enough to just reschedule it.....she got two tardies today that make 2 more 1hour asds.....of course she is only tardy, disrespectful, lazy in one teachers class, we have had aproblem with this teacher for awhile......I dont know what to do with her, i know she is ready for summer break but jeez shes got 4 detentions next week The ap is actually very nice and wants to take care of alicia's attitude problembefore it gets any worse.....if she has another atitude related referal she will be in iss for a few days....I also think the ap wants to arrange for the teacher, him and alicia to sit down and talk, i hope that helps. Sorry this is so long... Thankyou, Angela

Angela, I can see your point of being up set, I sure as heck would be. With this attitude thing, becareful she's not trying to get external suspension. God love him for admitting it, my husband would skip Saturday Detentions over and over jsut to get an external. His school didn't have internal suspension then. Just trying to help you out. And as far as attitude, just be glad you didn't have me for a daughter. I am ashamed to admit, I had a BIG OL ADDITUDE. But I'm fine now, snapped back into reality, Kaiti

Alicia absolutly HATES ISS i think the scare tactic of iss may have worked, the ap said she was actually pretty good today, except a few minor incidents, i know she'll act up again after the saturday is over......I hope the ap will stay on her case to keep her from acting up, she seems to do better if he is on her case.
Thank you Angela

I nearly had ISS...once.
It was for skipping a lunch detention that I didn't think i deserved.
I had band, then history. The history teacher was NOT one of my favorite people. When I went to that class, I would drop my bag at my desk, then go to my locker to get my book because it was easier than trying to navigate the halls with my backpack on. Well, when I went to class that day, I didn't have a desk. I was standing next to the teacher for a good 3 minutes waiting to talk to her to ask about a desk because I didn't want to interrupt her conversation. She made me take a tardy to go get my book. The AP let me out of ISS and any punishment at all when I started crying. She checked my record, called my mom, and told me not to worry about it.
Then again, my brother and his friend liked ISS more than regular school. They had everything for 2 weeks done in a few days, so they got to pretty much just do whatever for the rest of it. Gee, I wonder why they were in there in the first place? 'cause they got bored in computer science when they had a sub (the normal teacher would give them other stuff to do) and wrote a program that flipped around all the screens in the lab and made a smily face bounce around on it. The teacher knew exactly whose computers to check too.
