Hi,
My DS who is 11 is currently in 5th grade. As some of you know he had been on various medications for ADHD, and as of February a doctor diagnosed him with PANDAS. He is no longer on stimulants. He has developed night terrors since having the Flu in December, it's been a very trying time.
His grades are B, B+ at school, he gets some support at school and I support him at home. He is in regular ed classes.
OK, I get a call yesterday from the Learning support teacher asking to have a "team meeting" on May 6th. Not an IEP meeting but a team meeting. She goes on to tell me that the teachers are conserned that my DS will not get the support in 6th grade that he is in need of.
In 6th grade they do not want him in a low track because he is bright, however the middle track has support 3 days a week for 45min. to do homework and study for tests. My DS need help with packing up and writing assignments. He also needs to be called back to task. I was told some individuals from the middle school will be visiting his school to observe him to help determine placement for next year. I am fine with all of this until . . . She mentions possible "alternative school". He will be out of 5th grade in 2 months and now they are suggesting their is no place in middle school for him.
I a broken hearted about this, I mentioned all the possibilities to my DS, he said he would refuse to go to any other school. He said he would take any medication in order to be with his friends. My heart is so heavy.
We have an appt with the Neurologist next month before the school meeting.
The school also wanted me to bring someone to the meeting to discuss PANDAS. I have nobody to bring, I have all the information. Last week I sent a note to the principal confirming PANDAS from the Neurologist - I believe since my DS cannot be on stimulants the teachers are concerned for him.
He has an IEP, can't I insist he get the support needed next year?
Any suggestions are welcome.
