I had a meeting with the school regarding DD's progress or lack of progress. I got there and was very surprised by the large amount of people. I was expecting teacher, school psych., principal, and possibly a teacher from next grade up. But, no, there was all those mentioned and six teachers from the next five grades up. At first, I was thinking okay this is a little overkill having people making decisions that did not know my daughter. They started out by mentioning retention was needed and I immediately advised them that DD is officially diagnosed severe adhd and what are they going to provide for her. Retention was not brought up again.
They talked about curriculum, which I agreed with their thoughts, but then the conversation turned toward behavior and authority. I told them that DD normally does not have a problem with authority unless she are feeling disrespected and then it is usually sticking her nose up in the air and walking away or putting them on ignore. Even though teacher and principal said that DD has never disrespected them, she has told the cafeteria lady to leave her alone. EXCUSE ME, I didn't realize the cafeteria lady had such an important role in DD's education and I told them that. I explained that cafeteria time is very unstructered and DD is impulsive at that time because of the noise and activity. AND besides this lady yells at DD from across the room and all the kids stop and stare at her. Principal figured out what I was saying and said that talking back to the cafeteria help was the impulsiveness coming out and symptom of the ADHD and not purposely disrespecful.
I mentioned to them that DD needs help with social skills and what can they do with that. All the teachers there agreed that they have kids in their own classes that could use help and the principal is going to organize a social skills group for those kids under the guidance of the school psychologist. Also, they are all going to help with any self-esteem problems and picked out a student mentor from the older grades that would work with her to make her feel accepted.
I don't know if it was telling them about the diagnosis or what, but everyone agreed this meeting was now "premature" to make any decisions.
