I just got back from my sons conference, good news is his grades are all A's and B's. which is great because 4th grade in his school is very difficult. The bad news he is very emotional at school cries when things do not go his way. He is 9 years old and soon kids are going to start making fun of him and alienating him. He tries to get his emotions under control but can't. He was on paxil last year and it worked great but I really don't want to put him on it again. He is on 27 mg. of concerta. Does anyone have suggestions on what I could do? Does he need an increase in meds? Does he need a different med entirely? Any suggestions would be great.

I have three school conferences coming up next week, all in one day within 15 minutes apart. One of them is with my ADHD, ODD, OCD, Bipolar, SAD, Mild mental retardation, PTSD.. I know she is getting good grades here with the homework battles we have. I think she will be getting good grades in class, but atleast she is trying. The 17 yr old is in SPED and so far straight A's this quarter. The other 2 are on the pass/no pass system. ;D ;D

I am totally guessing, but I would think the med would need to be LOWERED not upped for emotional outbreaks like your son is experiencing... Unfortunately sd is autistic so I dont know a whole lot about emotional break downs like that... Good luck!! maybe this bump to the top will get you some more suggestions...

My son is very emotional also. He is now 13 and can control it better. The Dr. put him on 25mg Zoloft 2 years ago and it has done wonders. I have always considered our son to be soft hearted and sensitive. This has seemed to be a curse for him with other children though. I have come to realize that this is also due to his depression. I dont think I would take him off the meds knowing that it helps him deal with his everyday life. I just tell him that it is ok for boys to cry but I understand that other children make fun of this too so he has to try to control it in public and just come home and cry to me if he needs to.
Mabey one day the world wont be so mean.

Definitely speak to your doctor. My son was an emotional wreck on Concerta, but is doing quite well on strattera. Maybe a different med for the adhd, or an additional med for the emotional lability. There are other SSRIs than paxil (zoloft, prozac, lexapro, to name a few). Your doctor should have some ideas for you.
Best wishes to you both.

thank you all for your well wishes and advice. we added lexapro last tues. We have been at disney all week and things have been great, but things at home are generally great. it is the behaviors at school that have us concerned. We will see how things go. He did great on paxil so I hope the same goes for lexapro. Does anyone know anything about it? Thanks for any insight.
