It has been a week now that the boys are in regular school. I didn't realize that being in a good school could make such a difference.
What makes this school better than average in my opinion is the principal. He took the boys and I on a tour of the school when no one was there and then the next day when kids were in class. He did this because he recognized they have special needs and wanted them to feel comfortable. It is his special gift to work with kids who need help. He has a gift of kindness and understanding. Each teacher they met shook their hand and gave them a little gift (pencil, gel pen, notebook, etc.). I have an IEP in place for "fire boy" and even he is doing fine and making friends.
I asked him about kids making fun of others who were different or had problems making friends. He told me about one boy who had a serious disorder, I think it was aspergers? When the boy was out of the classroom he had a talk with the class and explained what the childs disorder was. The kids were encouraged to ask questions so it was like a learning experience for them. Then he asked the class to put themselves in that childs place. I think this was a 4th grade class. From then on that child was well accepted and had many friends. This is just one example of how this principal runs his school. I love this man.
Does anyone else have a good principal to tell us about?

Oh Mamma, that is wonderful! I am so glad the kids are adjusting well. It sounds like you are too.
I have to be honest, I have not had much contact with the principal, but from what I see he seems like a decent guy. I know the kids really like him. What I have seen is Honey's teacher. This is her first year teaching, but she is a little older than regular new teachers. She is 33 or 34. She is awesome. Any problem I have ever had with the school has been from the Early Childhood teacher or from the front office ladies. Honey's teacher is exactly what I would ask for. She calls me if she thinks there may be a problem, and she is always honest. At first she told me that Honey was adjusting well, but when enough time passed and she noticed that he was not fitting in. (Not so much not fitting in, but he has to interest in friends. He doesn't want them, others actually want to play with him and he refufes to let them.) She called me right away. We talked about it and she actually asked ME if I knew anyway she could help him. She also gave a few suggestions of her own. This woman also takes extra time to send home special packets of things for Honey to work on at home. They are not the same exercieses from school either, she makes them special just for him. For Christmas she bought all of the kids a book. The one she got for him was all about having friends.
His teacher is just the best. I know teahcers are supposed to care about the kids, but she takes it to a higher level. She is not required to do half of the things she does but she does them anyway because she is just that caring. ;D
I wish there was not a policy at the school about the kids getting gifts for the teachers b/c all I can do is send her thank you notes. She deserves a raise as far as I am concerned, she school got lucky when they hired her.

Yes, I am relieved. I hope it is lasting. It seems like I am always waiting for something bad to happen. Like just around the corner it's waiting for me. I must learn to cherish these times no matter how short they last. It easier said than done but I will work on it. Thank you all for your support.

That's great. I think that that is about as good as a school can get. They even have a way to address the peer thing. You were a courageous mom to give it a try. You deserve success (isn't it just hard work?)

Gee what are you doing with all that extra time..heheh Quit tempting me!!!!!
I'm very glad that they seem to be in good hands.. if I had that here .. I would be more tempted.. But when a school sits and waits for meds to work rather than embracing the child and working with his differences.. it stinks.
So go fire boy!!!

HoneysMom:
If the teacher is that good and you want to do something nice, write a letter of commendation about her to the principal and copy the superintendent of schools (and her!). That would go into her personnel file and make her look really good to her "bosses."

A BIG THANK YOU ALL!!!
Madison, You were right all along. Thanks for telling me like it is.
I didn't know you were so talented with these moving signs. That's beautiful, I wish I could get the hang of it but I have two left thumbs.
