I thought Riley got hurt at the football game last thursday (speared in the ribs with a helmet). It took all I had to not run out on the field and get to him before his coach. Anyways he got up and to the sidelines and I just thought he got the wind knocked out of him. I watched him through out the game and he didn't seem the same but it was a very important conference match (with our team being undefeated). So when we get home he is really upset and said he hurt a little so I put him on the couch with the heating pad to sleep. On friday pain was worse (he was at a level 6 of pain) so I took him to the dr and she had xrays done and said he has severe contusion to his right rib and xray says it isn't broke. She gave him naproxen, vicodin, and a muscle relaxer-flexeril. All weekend he still cannot breathe and when I give him his meds he is out like a light. We go back today and I know he is going to get more xrays done but I think there is something else seriously going on. He says pain level is now at a 5 even with all the meds he is taking. I can't believe that I kinda humed around friday trying to decide whether to take him to the dr. or not?? I am worrying so much~~~just hoping all is ok with him.

:-XCheryl, don't beat yourself up about not going anywhere as soon as he got hurt. Ask the doctor what the pain level should be, even with the meds. I have taken pain meds before, but the doc told me to strictly stick to the time line because if I took it WHILE in pain, it wouldn't work as effectively. Tell Riley to take it easy for a while, he's in my thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery

I agree with the others...you have no way of knowing how to react at first...you do have to wait it out. You didn't do anything I wouldn't have done myself.
Also, Kaiti is dead on about the pain meds. Tell him to take them before the pain hits...in other words keep him on a steady schedule of them these first few days. Pain relievers are more effective if taken BEFORE the pain hits than waiting until it does. In other words, it's easier to prevent, than to stop.
Give him a big "get well soon" from me!

One other thing to remember for next time, heat should not be used on anything swollen. Ice should generally be used for the first 24 hours. You should do 20 minutes on 20 minutes off.

It's always hard to know what to do unless the pain is excruciating from the beginning. Don't feel bad. I always second guess myself. If I do take the kid in and it turns out to be nothing much, then I think I overreacted. It's just hard to know. I do hope you find out for sure that it's nothing serious and can relax. To reiterate what others have said: They always tell us that after surgery to take the 1st dose of pain med just as the anesthesia is beginning to wear off--before the pain sets in. I think it's true for subsequent doses also.

Well the dr says he is still very swollen and brusied. No school until thursday(when we go for a recheck). I should have known to use the ice considering I just had that shoulder surgery. I have some great ice bags from the hospital think I will get them out. He is still in pain but resting and watching the tv. Lucky Riley I bought him the dvd The Longest Yard of course he played on my feeling bad ;D ;D. Just wait until he is better there are plenty of land mines from the dogs in the back yard ;D

Those fathers of our children always think the children are being overly-dramatic. I understand your frustration. My ds never gets sick, but when he says he is, he means it! You hang in there for your son...no child would want to have to make up that much work!

oh cheryl, please dont beat yourself up. it is extremely hard for me to know when ds is truly having pain, as he SWEARS that every little bump is excrutiating one of my close friends broke several ribs earlier this yr and she said meds didnt even touch the pain at all. thankfully, riley's arent actually broken, but i am sure the pain is still very strong. i cracked a rib before i had ds and it hurt like #$%%^!!!!!! lots of hugs to you and riley
