It has been two weeks now since mom was dx'd with the pneumonia, and though she is seeming much better during the day, she is still coughin really bad at night. The hard-headed woman had some medicine called in for her Monday evening to her pharmacy, but never got it yesterday. Instead, she spent the day with..guess who? So, when she could have picked up this medicine yesterday morning on her way to K's, she waited until on her way home and missed it because the pharmacy had closed. Whole day that she could've had meds in her..gone! And of course she paid for it last night...as well as me! Anyway, how long does it usually take to get over pneumonia? Her doctor told her when he called Monday evening that he was calling this medicine in and if she wasn't better in a week to get back with him. I'm busy starting end of month at work but will check back periodically for responses, and any knowledgeable ones will be greatly appreciated!

Hi Christy, sorry to hear your mom isn't all better Just remembering when Mike was telling me he had a rare form, he was in the hospital for 2 weeks. I know it doesn't help much since I'm not a nurse, but anything i have heard it usually sticks around for a month to be out of your system. BUT if she was with who I am thinking, smoke will aggrivate whatever progress she had. Is her head elevated a bit when she sleeps? I had a child that at nap time had to be at about a 45 degree angle or she would cough the entire time. Christy :-XI hope she gets completely recovered soon.

Christy, I´am so sorry to hear your mom is still feeling ill As for your question; a basicly heathy adult can get rid of pneumonia in about 2 week´s+++(but if they dont take care of themself´s, it´ll take week´s). It´s a lot about did they get the right med for this bug or not... Remembering your mom has lot´s of other issues of health(did I remember right?) I´am not supriced she´s still couching. It can take few week´s to heal complitely, but I think that after this week, if shes still feeling bad, I´d see the doctor. Lot´s of to both of you.

The cough can last up to a month. GET THE PERSCRIPTION FILLED! Kaiti"s idea about sleeping at a 45 degree angle is good. Keep her drinking hot liquids. It will loosen things and help her relax. Walk some but don't over do. pneumonia is a tuff nut to crack. Follow the Dr's advice and keep going.

Thanks to all of you!
She is sleeping at an angle..she has a foam wedge she uses all the time...and when she gets to coughing too bad she gets in her recliner.
As far as her meds, I gave her a good lecture on that this morning as well as K. I wanted K to know that mom cost herself a day of having this med in her system because of her "need" to be there . The presc. was called in too late for her to go to town and get them Monday evening, buyt instead og going to get them first thing yesterday morn, she instead goes to K's house (of course) where she spends ALL day. She left my house at 11:00 am. Yesterday was Andy's birthday so we took him out to dinner and mom stayed at K's until time to meet us at the resteraunt with plans to get the med on the way home. Well, by the time we left the rest. it was too late, the pharmacy was closed, so she didn't get them. Nevermind she had had all day...but hanging out at K's is apparently more important than her health. AAARRRGGGHHH!!!
She was getting anti-biotics intravenously while at dialysis until last Friday, but apparently they haven't knocked it out completely yet. At least now I know a time frame to look for the coughing to start getting better.
Now, back to work!

Just as a note: coughing can keep going on even after you've gotten over the infection. This is why Mom always dreaded me getting sick - I'd be sick for a week, then coughing for a month until the damage I'd done to my lungs and airways is entirely repaired. Drives Mom crazy.

Well, she got the presc. the doc called in for her yesterday...she seemed to be doing better last night. Good thing, because the danged woman ain't never going to slow down and let my lazy sister fend for herserlf and take care of her kids alone! She called me just a littlw while ago already over there and plans to stay there until this evening. She has dialysis Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays...days she's not there she is at K's. The woman makes me nuts! LOL
