Well my son started this year without meds the first half of the trimester - I was told by the teachers after the first week:
"He will not make it in Math."
" He can't handle language arts"
"He needs small group instruction"
"He needs help from the learning support specialist"
He received help from the LSS for the first half of the trimester.
We got our report card two weeks ago - sure he wiggles a bit still - but the teachers said when he gets the test - he nails it - he got a B+ in a middle school science test and the teacher was thrilled.
The learning support specialist said he does not need her most of the time - there is no talk of "he can't cut it".
He is doing great - I am so proud of him. after the first half of the trimester we put him on Adderall XR - he is 117 lbs on 15mgs - it's just enough to help him focus.
I told the teachers I wanted to start him off meds - so when the meds were added they would appreciate how well he was doing - Previous years he would start on meds and all I heard was more, more, more. Now they are accepting the wiggles - and appreciating the focus!
My son has side effects on too much meds - tics and increased body movements - so to increase them too much causes the teachers to assume more is needed - these teachers can see the slight increase in movement but are very happy with the focus!!
They tell me he seems not to pay attention - but when questioned about the subject has excellent answers.
Communication has been great this year - for the first time I applaud his teachers - they work with me and take suggestions - and what do you know the suggestions have all worked!!
Ok - I'm going on now:
They give a timed times tables test - 50 facts in 3min. He is expected to do 30 - He did 30 but not the "first two columns". I told the teacher to "fold" the paper" to only expose the first two columns.
at first he had a 64 after folding the paper he got 100.
It's the little things
