I'm so tired of the typical womens magazine "how to lose 10 lbs in 10 days", "what does your man really want in bed".... you get my drift! It's all the same stuff that I have been reading for the last 20 years! This past spring, as I was in one of my first substitute teaching jobs, I picked up the Organic Style magazine in the teachers lounge. I was so intrigued that I actually took the little piece of paper between the pages that usually only annoys people! I've since subscribed. There are some fluffy articles, but most of it is helpful, thought provoking information! If this sounds interesting to you, check out their web site organicstyle.com. I don't usually advertise, but I thought this was worth sharing!

It is very interesting. Lots of good recipes, too. I took a look and found a link to a list compiled by Greenpeace of foods that do not contain any genetically engineered ingredients (and a no-no list of foods that DO contain GE ingredients). www.truefoodnow.org/shoppersguide/guide_printable.html

Catatonic, I hadn't seen this! Thanks so much, I book marked it immediately! What a horrible (extremely helpful) list! I've been working so hard on educating myself regarding food. I've been trying to make my own bread because of the HFCS in every kind on the shelf, but I'm yet to get some good organic flour. I keep striving.....

Believe it or not, you can buy organic flour at amazon.com . It's not the cheapest way to do it, but it is less expensive that ordering from a specialty catalogue or website.
What I do is have the Sun Harvest health food store near me special order it. Normally that means I have to purchase the entire 25lb bag, but since I have a fairly large family and make bread most days, that's not a problem.
Also most health food stores carry Bob's Red Mill brand and Arrowhead Mills. Do you have a health food store near you? Eden Foods makes a lot of organic flours and pastas, and I know they do milling in Detroit and Clinton, so maybe their products are available in Michigan?
Trouble is, once they slap an "organic" label on it, the price doubles!

Cat,
I'm going to try the little health food store in town today. I go to trader joes about every 2 months (about 30 miles away)... I love that store! If I want to hit a large store, than I have to drive 25+ miles. I may check out a "local harvest" store when school is back in. I've also just emailed somone about a coop about 15 miles away.
Are you hand kneading your bread, or do you use a bread machine? I just borrowed a machine from my neighbor last week, and I've already made more bread than she has in the last 5 years!

Thanks for the list Catatonic. I'll be e-mailing my mom thje link as soon as my e-mail is back up. Our problem around here is that we really don't have anywhere close. And of course that ORGANIC label is a pain...as far as prices. I'm going to have to check out that magazine. Thanks Kaiti

I do have a bread machine. What a time-saver! My dad picked me out a new one for Christmas that has more options than the old one did (but is still simple enough you don't need a degree in electrical engineering to figure it out) and also makes a regular shaped loaf. I love it. Once a month, I stay up really late and make a couple dozen mixes in ziploc baggies, so when I need to make bread I just dump in the mix along with the necessary water, oil and yeast. Takes 2 minutes. My kids have suffered through some awful bread experiments -- including our first weeks gluten-free, when all I managed to bake were gritty bricks -- but the machine helps insure pretty decent bread (usually). The rising time and temperature are always ideal, and since it turns off when the bread is done, I haven't actually started anything on fire in the oven in quite some time!

I picked up the Organic Style magazine. I think I might have to get a subscription, once I have a permanent address again.
Many thanks for the suggestion.
