This last week a child died in a nearby town...She and her brother were playing in a Dodge Durango on one of those days when it was over 100. There were four kids in the family. The boy was the oldest and he was 4. Their daddy was babysitting while mom the nurse worked. Seems dad was mowing the yard (it was suppose to rain the next day) and the kids were playing in the car. The boy let it slip into gear and the girl (3) tried to escape but got caught up in the seat belt climbing out. DOA at the hospital where her mom was a nurse. They are questioning why the car didn't have the safety feature of stepping on the break before it would go into gear.....(even though we all know the first thing little kids do is push peddles ,buttons, and knobs) NOONE has asked why they were playin in the car , why was dad mowing while alone with 4 little ones , or why were four kids out in that kind of heat ? They haven't put one news item out there to warn parents of the dangers of kids playing in cars, they havent mentioned one time how unsafe it is to leave small ones unattended like that..just alot of blame to the car.. I realize that the dad must feel horrible ..but AM I CONFUSED or What? I would be putting reminders out there all over the place about kids and cars etc..
It just really messes with my head when they do these things...the grandparents said that God must have a need for her..(I know this is a way to cope ) but no one has said Please dont ever let this happen to you.

M/C, I don't think you are confused at all. I would be asking ALL the same questions.

I agree, why was the dad not watching the kids , and why wasnt the car LOCKED in the first place with young kids around. I guess he didnt hear about the 3 little ones who got locked in the trunk and died in Utah last month . When I mow my yard, my kids are in the house reading , that way nothing flies out from the mower and hits them.

When I think about this more... the oldest was 4 and they were playing unsupervised i´ve jusyt lately started to trust my kid´s a bit more, like letting them to stay at home when I´am away for few minute´s... but my kid´s are 10, 7 and 4 and all of them can use the phone etc.... and still it feel´s like not good idea to leave them for any longer time, even when I know the neihgbour is near and willing to help....

Last week on the news there was a story of a 4 yr old girl that was also playing in a car and she was standing on the arm rest of the door hanging out the window and her foot hit the window button and the window rolled up and got her neck stuck in the window~~~she later died at the hospital. They said that the window buttons work even when the car is not running. This family lives in another town so I don't know them but what a tragic thing to happen.

Thanks for posting these wake up calls. Although I try to keep an eye on Nate 24-7, he does escape my viewing once in a while. My rule is no more than 3 minutes. I have found that he has an uncommon curiosity with electricity. I have to be on him to monitor that part. He has shown an interest in cars lately too. Like turning the buttons, wipers, radio etc. He asked to start the car the other day but I clearly, but kindly refused to allow him to do so. I had a cousin who grabbed the keys, started it and put the car in reverse across a busy highway into the porch across the street at the age of 5. No injuries except for the porch. Also had a cousin who died with her boyfriend in a car outside their home. He had an old car with holes in it. They were spending some alone time together and died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The parents were inside watching tv and saw the car running. With regard to common sense and warning lables, I saw one the other day on a stroller that said, "please remove infant before folding". Common sense, where is it these days. Miles

I realize that the dad will have to live with this the rest of his life and that is sad..BUT ..I just want to shake him ..(good thing I dont know him ) The same day..in the same town they busted some womans boyfriend as he had been repeatedly for months (with her permission) shocking her daughter with a electric prod.... I am gonna quit reading the paper ..BUT What is wrong with people. The lady up the road has an infant .I reckon its under 6 months as it isnt crawling or nothin..she dunked it in the pool in their front yard ,then wrapped it in a blanket and put the child in a recliner lawn chair and she went in the house. The only other people out there were two small not school age kids. No fence , no protectioin and it was over 100. out. I am in amazement at people...the planets must be in a weird position..no common sense what so ever out there.

this outrages me so much..... I just don't get it ! DH and I had such a hard time having out children we are a bit overprotective I am told.....lol..... ds is 10 and never has been left alone, this year is the 1st time he can go to the parc alone (1 block away) and I drove him to and back from school up till May (now he takes his bike) the school is only 2 streets down dh is as bad as I am lol here we need a high school diplomat to pick up garbage yet no parenting classes are available for new parents. then again like most of you said use your common sense..... come on ..... 4 yo alone in a car you don't need a diplomat to figure that it is trouble!!!! the window thing I've heard of it before how many kids must die for crying out loud, it gets me so mad.... how often I see kids in the front seat or small kids without car seats or not buckled I don't know parents are just plan stupid sometimes!!!! when my son was an infant I didn't buckle him in hes stroller once he was about 3 weeks old when I got home I lifted the stroller in the house he slipped out, he had a bug net that stooped him from falling out completely he didn't get hurt but believe me I learn a lesson that day..... I see infants in there little car seats not buckled, parent waking holding there seat I fringe dh gets so upset when I tell them how unsafe that is, most tell me they don't want to wake them blah blah ya would you rather he fall out then he will be awake!!! or what about pools not fenced in $#@$ down here a 14yo girl died last week when her hair got caught in the bottom drain, there was no negligence on any kind she was supervised but by the time the adult realized she was stuck and he went in he had to some out and get seizor's she never made it.... that is sad....
