To begin with..we allowed bud and a friend (kinda acts like he is one of our kids) to go on a camping/hiking/fishing trip along a local river a few weeks ago. They had a 23 yr old with them. It turned out fine until I found out the 23 yr old had Buds friend diving off of abandoned railroad bridges. A couple other grown ups also met him down there and was doing it
and partying. The boys told us. (thank God Bud has a fear of heights..he didn't jump) Anyway
Buds friend asked him to go again...this time in the new little boat he has. .
(He bought it as a used boat by borrowing the cash from me but he hasn't paid me for it yet.)This time with out the other adult..who wasn't much help anyway. Well we said okay if his foster parents said okay and they did. (they dont really care much) We trusted the boys so we relunctantly agreed.
The night before I had pictures run thru my head of my child drowning trying to get to shore. Silly of me but I woke Bud up and told him about it and to be very careful to wear his life jacket . I hadn't been to sleep but I kept seeing this image and it liked to drove me nuts.
They left Wensday and were suppose to meet his foster dad to be picked up at the other end Friday.
Last night Bobo got real nervous and insisted we go down to one of the bridge stops to see if we could see them about 7pm.
ANYWAY.. about the same time... they stopped along the river to fish and time got away from them so in order to stay on schedule(why we missed them) they had to get more miles in before camping. They actually tried to do the river in the dark ..and came around a bend and hit a log. The boat went over next to what we call a sink hole (the water is deep, swirling and sucks you under and holds you to the bottom) .
They made it out of the water by using the buddy system. They lost their spare clothes, a sleeping bag, one tackle box, their shoes, and Bud lost a wallet with his ID's and 20.00 in it. They saved the fishing poles, cooler, and the life jackets. They then hauled in the boat and emptied it and slept in it with wet clothes and one wet sleeping bag. This morning they came on up river to the nearest road and hailed a car and borrowed a cell phone to call me at my folks.
We are SOOOO.. lucky to have the boys with us still. They came very close to drowning. God does answer prayers and we are sooo thankful.
My best friend has lost one loved one in the same river (jumping off r.road bridges) and her father got sucked into a sink hole and almost drowned a few years ago.
We called the boys foster dad to tell him the whats and how's and he said "Oh they would have been okay all they had to so was stand up and walk out.." He evidently has not been on the river in a long time.
Bobo is gonna have to patch the boat.
We do want them to go back out in day light to do the river the right way ..kind of a getting back on the horse deal..but we are getting a cell phone and they will have supervision . (I dont care if they are 15yr olds...I no longer believe the foster dad when he says they can handle a three day trip alone..) I am gonna pay more heed to my intuitions and I might stop shaking next week. Jared on the other hand is very angry because I wont let him spend the night at a friends ...I just want the three boys under my roof tonight.
I am so thankful that I didn't lose either one of them.
I even went right out and bought Bud a new pair of shoes ..it took three stores to find a 14 1/2 wide shoe and I didn't even complain like I normally would've. (I hate shope shopping)
I know I have to let them go again...but ohh my.
