I'm I nut? I want them to push DS more.... we dont get marks like most other places no ABC we get progress reports the teachers say satisfactory progress but I think they are taking his ADHD as an excuse to let him slack. he has a very hard time with writting he can do better but they dont seem to push him to hard accepting it as is... I know he can do better can you believe the teacher asks him how many words he wants in his spelling test... part of me is thinking I am nuts things are going well so leave it, but on the other side is he being challenged to his full capacity...Should I say something? would you?

Wow, what a tough question. On the one hand you child is "passing." They are either taking into account his condition and cutting him some slack or the teachers are taking the easy way out. Not sure I like that. If your son is not being challenged, what happens next year, when he is being challenged and the teacher is not willing to cut him any slack. IMHO, I would say something. If he needs it, then try to get a IEP or 504 in place. But I believe they are doing a disservice to your son, by not making him work to his potential. Getting a free ride through life is not going to help him at all, nor will it teach him to be responsible for his own actions.

DITTO!!! Dad2brooke... I would address it also... I am sure all kids would take the easy way out if asked, but it will not benefit them in the long run... If you know he can do better, can you give the teacher a few pointers on what works to motivate your son more?? Definately tell the teachers though... They may not be aware that he can do better... I am hopeing it isnt the teachers takeing the easy way out!! cat

Teachers try, but sometimes they need help.
I'll give an example. My son has dysgraphia, so the teachers were excusing him from a lot of writing. I suggested letting him use a keyboard instead and that's turned out to be a much better accommodation. He's doing the work in a way he can do it.

Ds does have a IEP but its new and I'm not sure how much it will help. I think dad2brook you are right getting a free ride won't help him so I think I will write a note to her expressing my concerns. I am so shy most of the time I just sit back at go with the flow but this time I think I'll do someting Ds's future is at stake.
thank you
