called the principal today

Well I called the principal today to disucss the one teacher who is not working the IEP. He will fix it - so he saids. You see . .. my son came home last night and did not complete an assignment in English - he was told by the teacher he could not complete it at home and had to loose recess today to complete it. My son spent some time in the bathroom - he is experienceing some constapation with the meds - we are treating it - but he has to spend the time - also the work not completed was explained by the teacher and most the other children completed it - but he did not totally understand what she wanted. Now he has an IEP stating to repeat instructions - and if the other were ok with the instructions clearly she has the time to work with him - which for some reason she does not.

I don't want to start a fight - I'v been there , done that - it's a waste of time - I mentioned switching his class - the Principal said they don't do that - well I know one child switched early on and other parents have been discussing it as well - the principal is probably in a situation where if he does it now for one - he can't justify not doing it for another.

When I try to get clairification from this teacher on assignments it turns on my son - his lack of understanding or following throught on instructions. Dah!!! we know this, it's on the iep that he needs guidence and its one of our goals - we need to work towards that goal in a positive way - not just condem the child for his disability - and I dont think they can keep him in at recess as a punishment for not completing an assignment because of the disability.

Why don't some teachers get it???

I have no idea why teachers dont get it ... They are bordering on discrimination IMO for keeping your son inside for recess... It would be so much easier on everyone INCLUDING the teachers if they would just do what is specified on the IEP... I'm sorry you are going through this... Good luck

Hi,
I was told too on the teachers conference that she (teacher) isn't able to go over questions with my girl on assignment papers. She doesn't have a IEP as of yet but were in the process of it. Teacher said "I'm just NOT going to read every question to her." Like I would NEED her to read every question....NO! I would like for my child to read the sentences/questions to the teacher and she would SEE what words she can read and what words she CAN'T read! I guess bottom line is SHE doesn't have the time to help her like that on SOME not every paper. When you KNOW you've got a struggling child in class I KNOW they have some time to get up and go over to that childs desk and show a little extra effort!! No...she's wanting a evaluation so that my child can GET UP and leave the class for extra help at the special ed class with the other stuggling students in other classes. It's SAD that school has to be like this for HER or any other student!! They have to be LABELED via Special Ed to receive the extra help they need that a teacher right there in class could give to them! yes....my child has stayed in the class on RECESS a few times to complete papers or papers that she's gotten a failing grade on. I don't think that's really fair either but that's the way the school handles it. I really think that child is trying their best and needs the extra help while the WHOLE class is doing their papers. Punishing a SLOW student isn't the answer either...Do you think they are SLOW becasue they want to be?? NO...they wish more than anybody to complete and understand all assignments like the other kids. Sorry so long...take care....MADISON

My son came home today and he did NOT lose recess!!! Yea!! The principal must have been very convincing - the work they wanted my son to make up was PSSA practice - not every day work. We recieved no notes to do it at home - which would have been fine. the Principal assured me he would handle this - so far it seems effective.

Good news. Making a kid with a 504 plan or IEP miss recess is just plain mean. If the kid has adhd the teacher is only punishing herself because if any kid needs a break to run off some steam surely it's one with adhd. The teacher gets to put up with all that excess energy for another couple of hours.

I'd call it a vicious cycle. Get behind. Get antsy. Miss recess. Get further behind. Get more antsy. Miss another recess. Everybody has to be miserable by the end of the day. What makes teachers think this is an effective way to deal with an adhd child having trouble completing assignments?
