My 6 yr. old dare devil has an appt. at the children's hospital. I just can't take it anymore. We're afraid he's going to get himself into trouble, so he's going first, before his older brother. (who is having some testing done thru the school right now anyway) Our insurance won't cover it, big surprise. It costs $644 for the eval, how does that compare with other docs? I made the appt. for November so we can scrape the $$ together.

Our's was covered, but AI DuPont cleared it as an office appointment because they have a "clinic" type set up there. Sorry to hear it will be in November. I know what you mean by scraping it together though...I think a lot of us do. Come here to stay sane

ouch-ouch-ouch-ouch-ouch! That is a lot of money. Such a piece of crap that insurance don't cover it! But, if it gets your dare-devil the help he needs it'll be worth it!

That´s great, if you think he need´s help, you have to go and get it I think there is no "too early" in treating/dx adhd, the earlier you get some help the better. Sorry to hear your insurance doesn´t cover it, over 600$ sound´s like a lot, but I have no idea what it usually cost´s in U.S. In here, they do it by our taxmoney, all kid´s under 15(sometime´s under 18)get the doc´s service "free", or .... you can take your kid to privat doc and pay it (or the voluntary incurance may cover it)

That is pretty close to what ours was, BUT insurance reimbursed us for some of it... I am sorry that is not your case!! Took MONTHS to get the appt too... I dont know how you are going about this, and we didnt do this either, BUT I have heard that if you can document that the school is NOT doing what is necessary testing wise etc, you might be able to make them pay for an independent evaluation... Which is what it sounds like you are doing right?

OH I am sorry momto3wolves that it is isn;t covered on insurance and you have to pay for this yourselves... Being in the UK things are totally different here healthwise .... so I can't really compare directly ... we have a national health service which we pay for out of our salaries every month ... and Sam was lucky enough to get tested and treated through THAT service and we were also lucky enough (and YES it was lucky!!) to be seen within 2 weeks (against a waiting list of 9 months!) .... We did look at it privately just in case the National Health Service didn't help us ... but I won't even quote the figure they wanted!! What WOULD worry me a bit though is ... yes ok you know its $644 for the evaluation BUT will you be looking at a whole bunch more $$$'s for treatment? However, I say that as long as you CAN get this money together then it just HAS to be money well spent !! LOTS OF GOOD LUCK AND KEEP US POSTED !!

Our DS's evaluation wasn't covered by insurance either. We could have gone through the local school system, but DH had issues with that, so we paid almost (gulp) twice as much as you did to have the testing done.

I heard last week that if the kid has a diagnosis (at least in PA!) that Medical Assistance will pick up the cost of medical care, even if you DO have insurance! Call somebody (local social security office? or county health dept?) and see what they say. The lady I heard it from has an ADHD/gifted kid in Lehigh Valley, and she is trying to get the word out. It should be worth looking into. I figure, we are paying into the medicare system, we shouldn't feel guilty drawing from it while there is still a few dollars left in it! And why do you call him a dare devil ;D Don't ALL 6 y.o. kids try to walk on water

That's funny, trid, my mom suggested that a lot of kids would do that... I'm not so sure about that! I'm trying to see where we end up with the school educational eval for the older guy. The guidance counselor told me they'd have to do a psych. eval to diagnose ADHD, and i'm not so comfortable with them doing that. So after the educational eval comes back- IQ, reading. math and written expression and time on-task we'll decide what to do next. I'm pretty sure that this is what we're dealing with...so if the ped. doesn't agree, then I guess off to the children's hospital with him too. The insurance company does have psychologists that are in network that we could use for treatment. I'm not fond of them though, and especially not to diagnose my babies. Maybe we can find one that's not horrible for treatment.
