Sam passed his practical test today and that is the final of the tests he had to complete to drive alone on the road ... so he is now LEGALLY ON THE ROAD !! GULP!!
As you can imagine he is OVER THE MOON !! ... There is only a 20% pass rate on the practical test and he is certainly the ONLY ONE in our family to have passed FIRST TIME!!
But I am PETRIFIED !! He is out there right now driving around ... and I can't "settle" at all !! ... I need to sort this out and start to relax ... Please those of you who have kids who have been driving for a while tell me that this feeling PASSES ??

Way to go Sam!! Another safe driver on the road. I can understand the feeling even though Nate does not drive. On Friday, he crossed a busy street for the first time without help I wanted to shout out and coach him, but I held back. I guess we have to step back and give them credit when it is due. Our babes are growing up (in a good way) Miles

Oh and tell him NO CELL TALKING while he is driving!! The feeling does pass somewhat....but you go with the flow!! sighhhhhh

THANKYOU ALL OF YOU !! ... He is due to collect his Dad from the train station at 7:15 p.m. and I have told him "YOU HAD BETTER BE THERE!" LOL!! ... We HAVE bought an "extra car" which is right now in my Mum's garage and Sam doesn't KNOW about yet .... this will give him a LOT more "freedom of movement" ... but I have said to DH "Lets wait until the WEEKEND at LEAST until we let him know that!" (I personally am just "not ready! ) Sportsmom I nearly wept myself when you told about Riley going off in the car to the dance!! ... OMG how our kids are growing up!! and as for you waiting up and getting "I am tired and going to bed" ... OMG !! Now isn't THAT a "parent's lot" ?? ... I KNOW that one !! We are opting for the "add-on" training in the UK for Sam which is called the "Pass Plus" ... which is basically EXTRA training AFTER they pass but this time on the Motorways (or in the US Freeways) ... Many insurance companies recognise this certificate and it actually brings the premium down ... Anyway he is doing this on Sunday for the day ... and I think (insurance premiums disregarded!) this is a very GOOD "safety" training!! ... I think the motorways with their four or sometimes five lanes each way are incredibly daunting for new drivers!! Oh !! and here is a typical "Mom" moment .... After he was home having passed his test etc.etc. I said "I hope you thanked Roy (his instructor)" ... and he rolled his eyes - as if I were a complete IMBECILE - and said "Oh for Goodness sake Mum - do you think I am STUPID ... OF COURSE I did !" (Guess I should have given him more credit!! ) and thank GOODNESS all those years of saying "Make sure you Say THANKYOU Sam!" paid off!! ;D ... and MILES .. this brings me to your point about Nathan crossing the busy road ... we just HAVE TO stand back sometimes and LET THEM GET ON WITH IT !!

:DCONGRATULATIONS SAM Anne you will enver stop worrying, that's a mother's job. My mom worried abotu me and Mike getting home last night, then again I think the kids must have gotten on her last nerve YES, be sure to warn him of all the dangers.....slow down on back roads when there is a full moon, that's when most of the animals travel. Anne, he will be fine

Anne, I'm not yet in your shoes so I can't really tell you how to calm your nerves...but I CAN that everything I know about Sam tells me he'll be just fine! You have raised a responsible young man, mum, and I'm sure the responsibility will show thru his driving as well. Just always remember to remind him to always stay alert of the other drivers (remembering Paul's recent scare) and try to not let it drive you nuts. As Kaiti said, you will always worry some, mothers always do! ...even after we become adults!

Congrats to sam!! way to go! i now have both kids driving and i will always worry! as someone else said, it's our job! but i worry less as time goes on and they prove they can drive safely. they use the cell phone to keep in touch, that's been the biggest relief to me. i can reach them, they can call and tell me they went somewhere else or they're going to be late. One more step on the journey they take without us. karen

THANKYOU!! .. This morning during the "rush hour" and the traffic was HEAVY (as it always is at that time)... it was also raining HARD and very WINDY ... and my jitters started all over again !! ... I have to STOP this!! ... Poor Sam .. all he heard from me before he set off for college was "You do know where the windscreen wipers are?" and "Its VERY busy out there right now and you are not used to driving at this time of day so please be careful and particularly at such and such a junction ... " etc.etc.etc.!!! ... I just have to LEARN TO SHUT UP!! This all brings back memories of when he was driving his moped at first !! .... and as a colleague said this morning "A moped is a LOT more vulnerable than a car!!" ...
