At age 18, he went to LA and played guitar on Frank Sinatra's "Strangers in the Night", the Monkees' "Last Train to Clarksville", Elvis's "Viva Las Vegas", and Jan and Dean's "Little Old Lady from Pasadena".
He then starting singing and went on to sell 45 million records, winning 5 Grammys and having 27 top-10 hits. In 1967, the year of the "summer of love", this country / pop star had a double-Grammy-winning album.
Can you name this artist?

"Here we come Walking down the street We get the funniest looks from Everyone we meet. Hey, hey we're the Monkeys, and people say we monkey around. But we're too busy singing, to put anybody down. We go wherever we want to, Do what we like to do. We don't have time to get restless, There's always something new. We're just trying to be friendly, Come watch us sing and play. We're the young generation, And we got something to say. Any time or any where... Just look over your shoulder, guess who'll be standing there."

None of those, but those are all good guesses -- all very believable. The artist that I am describing had his own TV at that time, called the "So-and-So" Show after himself. One artist that I remember watching on his show at that time was Anne Murray. I made note of that, since she is from Canada.
This artist was the first crossover artist between country and pop music. He established a whole new genre of pop / country music, the likes of which now include Shania Twain (also from Canada).
This artist married four times and, although he is now 68 years old, still does about 80 concerts a year.
