I could not believe the remark my 15 year old son made today ... We were driving along and a police car passed us in the opposite direction .... going at top speed, siren blaring, lights flashing etc.... The comment : "Wow ... I didn't know girls were allowed to drive those vehicles" !! "EXCUSE ME" I said ... "This is 2004 ... not the dark ages ... what sort of a comment is THAT?" ... Realising he was getting himself in a corner, he tried to back-track ... "Well no ... no reason for them not to ... I just didn't know that they did or even would want to ..... " Hmmmmm !! ... To me this definitely reeked of chavanism ... which is something i don't want to see!

Anne, Tell your son that my little Honda does 90 quite nicely with me behind the wheel! ;D BUT, the chauvinism can work both ways. My dd takes tumbling at a gymnastics gym here and there are several little boys that she sees there every week. She has said on numerous occasions that gymnastics is for girls.. boys should be in baseball or football. She has also seen male nurses on occasional visits to see her grandma when she is in the hospital and has said "I can't believe a MAN would want to do a WOMAN'S job." So tell Sam that attitude can work both ways! hehe

Christy ;D
I am SOOO relieved to read that this works both ways ... and the girls are feeling the same way except the other way around !! (If the boys are chauvanistic then its only right and equal that the girls should be too ;D ;D) ...
THANKYOU for evening out the balance!! ;D

Just yesterday my DS13 said "Wow a lady truck driver! I did not know women drove those big trucks." Mind you that his father is a truck driver and his company has several women drivers that my DS has met. I guess it did not sink in untill he actually saw a women behind the wheel.

I ran my DH demolition derby car last year. It was a blast. I was the only woman and came in 2nd place. Would have won but my car caught on fire. It was a blast. Great stress reliever. ;D

YOU GO GIRL ;D Funny thing around here, well, I grew up with a hunting family. Took my test at 10, had a 20 ga shotgun for a Christmas present one year. Mom-mom and Pop-pop where both NRA Hunter Education instructors....So needless to say my husband is encouraged to do to deer camp for a week-dang it, he never goes though, no break for me ;D When the kids find out that I shoot and all, they are totally blown away. I actually have a pretty good shot, surprized my husband ;Dtoo Daddy didn't raise no sissy Kaiti btw my sis and her hubby are in a 4-wheel drive club. The only reason they can afford that is because they don't have any kids

Kaiti
I grow up in a farm, so I can drive a tractor, use a motorsaw and shoot too. I have my hunter-license, no time to use it anymore ;D and a license for shotgun and targetpistol.
My son cant stop wondering how mommy can drive a tractor, only BIG HEROE`S can do that ;D

In Canada, we now tend to use the word "sexism", rather than chauvinism. A "sexist" would be someone who discriminates on the basis of sex, and finds one sex to be inferior to the other.
Children are not usually thought so much to be sexists, but they do struggle with the stereotypes that society presents them. Children can grow up to be sexists if they don't have good parents like AnneM -- who are able catch stereotypic perceptions as they arise and correct them.
I think AnneM should get another gold star!!
Ageism is another big one here -- people who demean / hate seniors. And, of course, there is racism, homophobia, etc.
