I want to plant some flowers but there are a lot of deer in my neighborhood and needless to say I don't want to do a lot of work planting deer food. Does anyone know what kind of flowers I could plant that the deer won't bother? Is there such a thing? I live in zone 7 and the soil has a lot of clay in it. Also, it is full sun.
So far I have tons of Iris and creeping rosemary. Any ideas?

Hold that thought, my husband and I are debating this now..... I'll modify when we get a good answer...
Have you tried hosta? UM Hubby just said they are opprotunists, and he says good luck. Not funny though. We did see products that stop animals called liquid fence. I'm not sure about it, but they are very adaptable. My husband is trying to attract them, so let me know what they eat and we'll get that planted ;D
What about marigolds, petunias, peonies, roses, I'll look into it for ya. We have a lot about deer management here, so I'll see what we are supposed to avoid.

My Dh said to go to like a farm-feed store and get a bag of bloodmeal. Not real sure what it is. I'm in SW MO and around here you can go to the feed store and get a rabbit, deer repelant. Either product you just sprinkle it around the plants and they won't go near it and it doesn't harm the plants. Good luck

ohmama...Gardening is a passion of mine,but I don't know a darn thing about your deer problem.However I do know my flowers,so let me know what types you are interested in...Perrenials..or Annuals? Maybe both?

If I wanted to attract them I would put an area aside and give them some alfalfa and maybe a watering place for them to drink. It could be made attractive. That would hopefully keep them contained so they wouldn't roam all over where they are not wanted and you could enjoy them. They tend to go where they want though and don't understand they are not wanted in flower gardens. It's not possible to have such a space on my property though and I really doubt if it would work anyway, just a thought. It's too small. We have a pool and raised planter areas that take up the back yard space that consists mostly of cement around it.

The deer repellant doesn't work!! One of my neighbors has resorted to putting up an electric fence, another a tall metal fence. Most of my neighbors just put up with it and plant things the deer aren't supposed to like and let them nibble away.

One of my favorite times is in the evening after the kids are in bed and I can sit on the back patio. Everything is very quiet and I can look up at the stars, it is very peaceful. I live on top of a mountain and the night sky is very clear. It is a perfect time for prayer. I have shed many tears and given a lot of thanks there so it is a special place for me. Sorry, I'm getting off the subject.
Anyway, I would like to have a tropical setting in this area around the pool. I want plants that won't shed their leaves so I don't have to fish them out of the pool. Also I want color, bright purples and red, blue and yellow. I love the look of the large tropical plants like the banana tree, bird of paradise, or red rubber tree as well as the tropicana plant. Because I'm in zone 7 most of these are not an option, besides the deer would probably eat them anyway. I have the banana tree in my house though! Can you think of any flowering perennials that would work for me (zone 7)?
There is one palm tree that grows in my area that I have, the mediterranean fan palm I think it's called? I have that in the house too! I'm waiting to locate a spot to plant it. The soil is heavy clay and needs some attention before it will be able to plant out there.
The front yard has St. John's wort as a ground cover on the sloped sides. This is doing well and the deer don't bother it. I have a little grass in the front yard with the creeping rosemary around it and purple Iris. There is a stone walkway with a small moss garden that leads to the back pool area. I guess the deer don't care about moss cause it's doing very well. In the front I would like more flowering perennials that will bloom at different times so there is always color. It has full sun and as you know will depend on something those pesky deer don't like.

Trying o think of what perenials we have in the yard.
Canna Lilies would be nice for the tropical look. We had those lining our side walk fro a couple years and I miss them, they are beautiful....plus they attract hummingbirds.
Silver dust or silver lace...in the dusty miller family, somethign like that. Some of ours has come back, but not all, just depends on the winter and if it was heardy that summer. Phlox, Tiger lilies, day lilies, Butterfly bush, scotch broom....
Blackeyed susans run amoke over here. Hollyhocks if youd like a biennial, if the deer deciede not to eat it.
I'll look for some more.

How about some of the beautiful ornamental grasses...I think they would look nice by your pool.Purple cone flowers are another favorite of mine...as are the daisys.I love yarrow...they are yellow,and some of the newer hybrids are purple.These are all perennials.

Teres a product out there called liquid fence(at a feed mill or nursery would be your best bet) . It's a spray you put aroundyour plants and it replels deer. There's another type of repler that comes in a box w/ (i think) 30 little bags that you hang aroung the border of what you want protected(I can't remeber the name of that one though. good luck

Hi Oh mama! I´am not so familiar with english name´s for flower´s, so forgive me. I just love love peonio´s(sp?), they get quite big, about 50 cm high, lovely big flowering, come´s in white, dark red, lilah etc. Also "the bell of carpathia", it has flower´s like bell-shaped. As you know, I live a little nother than you, those grow really well in here. I have a "thing" with "rocky-cardening", lot´s of little needing though plant´s witch grow literary on rock´s, need´s really little soil under them  not to mention that they grow much better if you just leave them alone ;D. you almost had it Marja: peonies.....I always got hollred at for saying it wrong though.
I always said "Pineys" with an "i" sound instead of the "e" sound of PeOnies........

Kaiti ;D I pronounce it: pioni, very short letter´s all. I just love that flower and lilie´s. I like perenna´s, they are so though, when you get them planted they´ll grow and grow  OOOOH, I cant wait for first flower´s!!!!!!!! ( And, speak about pronouncing;my name is said more like Maria than Maarscha as I´ve heard it sometime´s ;D) In my language, thing´s are said like they are written, wich is totally different as english.
