Hi all, Does anyone have any great ideas to help with focus at school? I read in my Parent's Guide to ADHD (by Russell Barkley) that when ADHD kids are given more stimulation while working, they do better. Has anyone actually tried this? Like if I get some "fidgeting toys" or stress ball? I do remember that when I was doing homework, I got it done faster with music playing.

Yes ... this is interesting ... and a lot of adhd/add kids seem to concentrate BETTER if they have some background noise ... My son always went to sleep easier when he could hear a television for example ... and he also always had to have a tv on when he was doing his homework ... (probably way against the "rules" but it "WORKED" for him!) ...

both my kids do better with the tv or music on. i think part of it has to do with the technology these kids have grown up with. they even do some homework while on the computer doing instant messages. i do try to stop that but they both insist they do better with it going on. i don't have any other ideas but seems to be normal for most kids these days. karen

We´ve tried playing music by headphones in school and it worked nicely when he needed some more boost on his concentrating. I know some adhd kid´s use this special pillow to sit on, you have to move a little constantly to keep it straight... and stress ball´s, some find those usefull, mine just play´s with those if given opportunity

I've heard that listening specifically to Mozart helps when reading. However, I imagine that it would be difficult to get most kids to agree to listen to classical music these days.

I wish something like that would work for Nate. If he has an object, or something special, that becomes his focus, not the work he needs to get done. All are good ideas posted above, it just doesn't work for everyone. We tried. Miles

did anyone get to see GMA this morning? i saw some of it yesterday and it was a segment called Pay Attention. yesterday was more about adults and today was about kids. i had work today tho so missed it. yesterday said that all of us who multi task and think we're getting so much done, aren't. that it takes 50% more time to do two things at once than if we did them seperately. there was some sort of therapy that they showed for helping improve focus permanently. it was sort of like a video game (of course!) where you had to concentrate to keep your thing in a certain place. then the guy running it poked at deborah roberts and the little guy went below where he was supposed to be. they said it trained you to keep your focuse after 40-60 hours. i'd bet it's expensive and probably not covered under insurance but thought i'd share. i just wondered what they said today. maybe it's on their website. there might be some sort of idea on there for you mom to wolves. they also mentioned how because we are such a society of multi-taskers that some of the adhd is more society caused. those weren't the exact words but something to that affect. it also wasn't said as being there is no real adhd type of thing. just that we may see more adhd type behavior in this society because of how much we multi-task. karen

Has anyone in here ever tried a natural remedy called FOCUS? Hello heylove28 and welcome... Just to reiterate what Camismom says ... Focus along with several other products (B'Calmed) for example is in the opinion of most of us on this site a complete waste of money ... You might want to look into the Natural Alts section and do a search to find more info on our previous discussions on these subjects ... Whether you are in favour of medications or natural alternatives the opinion is generally the same ... I have yet to really find "someone" who has actually REALLY benefitted from these products ... (apart of course from those trying to sell them!!)
