Anneke, I know this will prove that I have never left the United States...
Is the dollar bill you are asking about from the United States, or is from a different country?
A US dollar bill typically deteriotes and falls apart after about 7 months of being passes around. If you save it long enough, it may become worth much more as a collector bill, but usually only if it is in excellent condition, not folded up or crumpled, or if it originally had a flaw in the printing. If it is just a fairly well worn dollar, it isn't really worth a lot, but it will still exchange for the going rate. As far back as anyone alive can remember here, the US dollar bill hasn't been replaced like what happened with the EURO taking its place.
I think that somebody on this board may be a collector of US currency and may be able to answer better.
And if it isn't US money... then none of what I say matters!

it are us dollars. the old ones have Jackson on the front and the white house on the back ( 20 dollar bills) one is from 1996 and the others from 2001.
but I have got some from 2004 with a nice orange collor and a blue bird ( also 20 dollar bills) also with the white house and Jackson but in a nicer back.
so I was thinking that the old ones might lose ther value.
there not worth to collect becouse they have been in my hiking boots.

Don't worry anneke, US money never expires. It is always good and always worth it's face value.
Recently the US redesigned it's money to make it harder for people with computers and scanners and color printers to make counterfiet bills.
Both you old $20 and your new $20 will always be worth $20 dollars.
I collect coins and paper money, and they don't sound collectable to me.

Wow !! Listen to that Anneke ... US money never expires!! Oh don't you wish that was the same in Europe?? ...
Recently "they" decided that all our £10 notes that had Charles Darwin on the back were no longer valid and we had a certain length of time (around 1-2 months) to spend them in ... I somehow managed to come into possession of one after the expiry date and it was point blank refused at a petrol station! ...I was hence SUDDENLY in possession of a totally useless piece of paper!! ... This is NOT an uncommon event - our currency changes constantly ...
I think the US have the right idea !! ....

Have Fun Kayla Faye!!! And I never thought about money expiring. I guess I'm just used to it here in the states, although, when I went to the Blossom Festival in 89 and 91, I had to remember to ask the merchants what the equivalent was between American Dollars and Canadian Dollars. Duh, and we paid too much for pizza and soda one night. Kaiti

Adhdx4 UK is in EU, but they haven´t got euro as they money yet, I´ve got the impression that there is quite lot of resistance of it in UK, understandable, because £ is so familiar and famous. We´ve been on euro from year 2002 now, it´s been okay. Marja

Hi adhdtimes4 - as Marja says we still stick with the good old £ !! ... but I think its only a matter of time ... and I MUST admit it is SOOOO Much easier when going to the rest of Europe now just to take ONE currency ... ;D ... I remember in the old days havng to take francs, deutsche marcs, belgian francs, florins, etc. etc. just for a 2 day trip!! ... Nowadays we can just take the Euro and go all over!! ... ;D
But then again adhdtimes4 I think 'you have a very good idea of what the English are like !! ... Stubborn and determined to hang onto their pound!! ... (which actually includes me to a degree ;D) ...
LOUD CHEER for the 77 days !!! ;D

Also - I feel pretty ignorant not knowing that the UK was part of the EU. I figured that since the currency was different...Learn new stuff every day.

My husband and I don't collect coins on a regular basis, like going to shows and stuff, but I'm going to have to dig through what we have. Mike used to work at a cocoa factory, and they used to get shipments from South America, so they would find all kinds of coins in it. He even found a ring in one bag. Took it to be appraised, they said it wasn't worth anything, but quickly asked to buy it. NO THANKS I'll keep the ring ;D Kaiti
