Okay, dumb question! I belong to another group here, and we just started a proboard forum... today. I made the mistake of being the 1st registered member. So now I am a moderator! What is it that I am supposed to do, how do I do it, I feel terrible that I have always taken our moderators for granted! Maybe we are just such a fantastic self controlled group that our moderators just seem like regular people But I feel sort of responsible for how the new board goes, and I don't know what I am doing! Any help, suggestions, chastizing, etc. is welcome. Condolences are also allowed. Thanks, Laurie

Did the administrator at the site that you are going to make you a moderator? Some proboard sites have one or more administrators and no moderators. So it seems to me that whether there are moderators or not is optional. What is the topic at that site? Are there many members yet?
I suppose that your main job would be to assist the admininstrator(s) on that site. The administrator has more powers than you, but you have the power to edit or delete other peoples' posts as well as your own, to delete whole threads and to stick threads to the tops of their forums. Since there are "terms of use" for proboards, you want to be familiar with them in general terms. Members must abide by them.
Other than that, I suppose that you just try to "keep the peace" and keep things moving along. You certainly don't have to know everything about every topic that may come up. Everyone is there to learn together.
Good Luck!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good luck Laurie I was wondering the same thing myself a little bit ago.
If it isn't improper, may I ask how the moderators came to be moderators. Please don't take offense, I almost feel offensive for asking it. I'm just curious

Some of us were moderators on the old site (1mom, myself, Veronika and Linda) and came to this site after Renee decided to sell the old site. Some became moderators during the first few days of this site as moderators were needed quickly and, as they say, fools rush in. Most of them had been members on the old site. The only person to be added since that first week has been Dad2Brooke, who became a moderator and then an administrator (largely due to his extensive skills with computers). Veronika has been busy with her own life for the last few months and we are very fortunate to have Ralph (Dad2Brooke). As well as being a kind and compassionate person, he has redesigned the site.
There are so many members on this site who would make excellent moderators. As some of us drop away by attrition, it is hoped that some of you will be able to take our places. To everything there is a season.

Thanks for the explanation. I wasn't sure if there was some group or something everyone came from. Sound stupid? I hope not. I guess it's that curiosity thing. And I wonder why my son was trying to figure out how to work a slicer, table model industrial can opener, and ice box last night. You are all excellent Moderators and I'm sure Laurie will make a great one too. Have a great Saturday Kaiti

I wasn't a moderator on the old site, but I was a frequent poster for years, until the last year of the site when things at home made it too hard to even get online. Veronika and I became friends online and she asked me to be a moderator when she started this site. That's my mod origination story. Laurie, I think you will be awesome. You always write such informative, warm and funny posts.

I remember when I first signed up here. I couldn't get a password. I emailed Veronika, and asked her to set me up because I had a lot to say.
She did, and I haven't stopped talking yet.
Anyway, I guess I was in the right place at the right time, and after a couple of months Veronika asked me if I wanted to mod.
Not long after that the site was going so well, she needed help with the admin duties, and since I llike the technical stuff, here I am.
But, I have to say, that it is the members that make this site what it is.
I have belonged to a few forums and practically every one of them erupts in a daily flamewar. We don't have any of that here. Everyone is kind and compassionate. We have all been there and done that, or maybe in the future we will be there and will be doing that.
We all may have differences here, but we all have the same common goal: helping our children.
And I have to say, it is an honor, privilege and a joy to be here doing what I am doing.

Laurie, I think you will be awesome. You always write such informative, warm and funny posts. [glow=red,2,300]Is that funny HAHA or funny peculiar?[/glow] Thanks for all the encouragement. My concern is that the forum is for the local PTA group... and it is likely to be a bit strenuous to say what we want and not enflame the district! I bumped into the Administrator of the site at the grocery store today. She is already offering to turn over the whole site to me, since I mentioned how often I visit this site and that I am familiar with the idea of a forum. I may have to write to Ralph hourly just to keep myself out of hot water I have had trouble keeping my mouth (typing fingers actually) with the school district as it is! RosyRed sent me my broom and hat... Time will tell. Thanks again! Laurie

[glow=red,2,300]Is that funny HAHA or funny peculiar?[/glow] OMG, you are too funny!! (haha, not peculiar, but I'll keep my eyes open for that!! ) I would guess that a PTA forum is different than ours because there is so much junk coming from the school system (wherever you live). Does the school district read what you all write? If so, then I guess you do have to be careful Would be nice if there was a forum where parents could go for help and venting that the district could not access.

The lady who has set up our forum is waiting till we get ourselves completely organized before she tells the world about us. So right now, we only have THREE members!
It is very easy to moderate such a small group of people!
I eventually want to see that forum expand to a state wide level. The group is for the parents of Gifted students in our district. Our group is a local chapter of the statewide Gifted group, so it is feasible that we can start the forum and then invite others to come join us. I think that at that point it will certainly be easier to vent against the district and not feel so vulnerable, because with the right screen name, you can be very anonymous, and not name what town you live in to put blame on an exact teacher or administrator.
Like this group, we are really just parents trying to get the very best for the children.
Thanks to everyone here, I feel like I can do it!

Laurie, if you need any help, just e-mail me. I'll see what I can do. At least help you look for whatever you might need. I have gotten a few thing for giftedness at the school, so they might help.
