I had one of those "There but for the grace of God..." moments today. My dd, who is in college, spent Jan-May last year in Madrid. While she was there one of her classmates died of meningitis, and I remember that heart stopping moment when she called me, crying, to tell me and how worried I was that she was so far away.
Well, I was going to check my email today and the headline on msn caught my eye....10 bombs go off in the Madrid trains, 190 dead, many more injured. Of course my first thought was "I'm so glad she's home!" But then I thought of those parents whose kids are over there this semester, and it was a sobering thought. I had to call her to say hi, even though she just left this morning to go back from spring break.

one year ago a 2 trains crached here becouse one of them got on the wrong lane. normaly I would have been on that train. I stil dont know why I took one train earlier that day but I am so hapy that I didnt take the normal train. several kids of my school died. its realy scary to know that i normaly would have been on that train.
just 5 days ago I pased madrid becouse we had to change plains there, lucky we didnt stay a few days more in madrid( my mother would not have survived it with or without bombs)

Glad yours are safe, I can't say I've been in that situation, it must be scary, but I'll be saying a prayer for the other families

...and it was exactly 911 days after 9/1/02. I was so moved by the number of Spaniards who went out in mourning and protest - one report said that over 1/4 of the country was out in the rain. Many raised white painted hands in protest, and chanted "coward" and "assassins".
What a horrible day in our world. My heart is breaking for that country.

Austinsmom, I, too, am so glad to hear that your daughter is home, safe and sound.
What has happened in Madrid is so incredibly sad. Today's paper says that 2 million people were in the march protesting the bombings. Can you imagine what 2 million people marching must look like? What an incredible response. I feel so much for them.
