I am in shock today my DS's occupational therapist approached me about my baby she knows him because I bring him with us to our therapy and she notices that he doesnt talk yet.... he is 27 months old and only says mommy daddy and very few words, I am watting for him to get tested for hearing but she talked about the possibility that he might have speach dyspraxia since DS #1 has ADHD and dyspraxia she thinks I should look in to it I wasnt ready for that.... the problem right now is that all my money goes for tutoring and a speach therapist will run around 80.00/hrs and my insurance only pays 20.00 max 300.00 a year. my DH will FREAK if I mention this....

Hi Mom2Tj ... I don't think I can actually be of any "help" at all here ... and I don't understand at all the medical insurance in the US (!) ... being in the UK... but I just want to say that I do sympathise with your worries on your baby ... and hope that someone else can offer a little more "help" ... !
GOOD LUCK!!

Hi 27 month´s Yep, I think she should have some 2-3 word phrase´s, like "mom, give milk" or the almost very popular:"I want this". At least that´s how it is in here. I think you deffenately should get her hearing schekked first, then a speech therapist schek up, mayby. She can still be an "late bloomer", but still, it´s worth of schekking out. Marja

I acualy live in Canada where healthcare is suposed to be free!!!! ya right....free if you are willing to wait.... our private sector is getting so big that it is ridiculous, unless I want to wait very long up to a year to see a speach therapist I've benn on a waitting list to 3 months now for a hearing test because I refuse to pay 80.00 (in the private sector) when I know he hears well.... my insurance does not pay that eather I realy wonder why we have insurance.... the worse part about it is that if your employer offers it the gouv obliges you to take it the employer can get a big fine for not inforsing it..... dont get me wrong we do have free medication and pay if you get sick free hospital stay in ambulance things like that and my kids have good care when it come to being sick DS #2 has asthma and he has been well taken care of the problem lies mostley non threatening ilnesses and tests. sorry to dwell I am so mad at my insurance wright now!

Lise, Even though the OT said something, Marja has a point with being a late bloomer. I used to teach 2 yr olds at a private day care, and there were quite a few that wouldn't talk.
Some would put words together here and there, others would give me a hug if they wanted something. Some just didn't have the need because a big brother or big sister would talk for them (like at my house, and they still do it, wonder why Mikey is 6 and not pronounceing things appropriately).
Does the little one grunt for things or have any type of communications that they get your attention for? My cousin was trying to get her little boy to talk, but his other grandmom would spoil him and let him grunt for everything, ( >:(my cousin wasn't happy) But he's 9 now and talking just fine.
AND the little ones that grunted or gave me a hug for what they wanted, none that I know of has any type of problems, at least hearing and speaking wise.
Don't worry too much, you could drop a few things and see if it startles your little one. Do it from different distances and from different angles- left-right-if front-behind., That might give you a better idea of a level of hearing
Hope that helps Kaiti

tks kaiti, I was not concerned up to yesterday... I know he hears something thats why I put him on the waiting list insted of paying for privite testing... but yesterday I called my ped to ask about what the OT said and she told me that is was posible but not to worry to much what she want to rule out is that he might have liquid behind the ear drum that might make him hear in an echo.... she thinks this is possible because he had sooo many ear infections. She said it is possible that he is reading lips and immitating what we say because the words he says are all simple words mama dada pipi tt bye bye that is it..... if he wants milk he will drag me to the fridge and take out the milk, I've tried to make him say milk but after 1/2 of crying I gave in! I say milk everytime I give it to him I spent all my days naming everything it drive my 8yo nuts....

Mom to Tj O´kay, now I read your earlier post right and figured out she is he ;D 27 mo´s would equal to 2y3mo´s So I deffenately go with this late-bloomer idea, as a little(mayby very activ ) boy, that doesn´t sound too bad. Your ped has a good idea of schecking the ear´s, but other wice I´ll turn my opinion to wait a little bit!(if everything is all right with ear´s) Marja

the test showed no sign of Speech Apraxia the Dr. told us he was just trying to talk to fast he wants to get it all out and he needs to slow down.... he is a VERY busy baby wants what he wants NOW! I am soooo releived.
God had answered my prayers....
