Just as a little thing to do, I put the Amber Alert ticker on my desk top. It took about a whole 2 minutes to do, and wasn't too difficult to follow.(if I can follow the instructions, anyone can)
I just wasn't sure if you all were aware that you could put it on your desktop. About 7 yrs ago a neighbor of ours' had a missing daughter. The ending wasn't good, so I'll spare the details.
I just felt like this is something I should do, so if you want to too, click on the ticker, and it will take you to a screen that will allow you to get it free for your desktop. You don't have to put in your e-mail unless you want to for up dates, so....
Have a good weekend Kaiti

Good idea Kaiti! The Amber Alert helps our large country to become like a small community - immediately the 'whole town' knows that a child is missing, and we ALL go on the lookout.

There was a programme on a little while ago here in the UK about missing children and showing some of the ideas our police have to help with this. On the programme the police visited the US and spoke to your police who put Amber Alert together with a view to maybe doing something similar ... it was hugely impressive ! ... I say WELL DONE to the U.S. for coming up with this amazing and effective idea! I just hope we will follow suit VERY soon (the sooner the better!) ...

I read around the amber alert site and found that there are people that have made donations to it. I can't really swing that, but it is possible.
As long as it helps somewhere down the road I'm glad it was initiated. Kaiti
Anne-maybe you can write to your governing body, I'm sorry, I don't know how government specifically works over there, but there has to be someone that you can pester.

Good idea Kaiti!! ... although it looked (from the programnme) that something is definitely going to be done ... but the more pestering the better I think .. to make sure they actually DO something! ... In fact I just did a little investigation on the web and it tells me that there is a "pilot" scheme of Amber Alert presently taking place in the UK .... (but I have to say I haven't seen anything about it!!)

Well, at least they ARE taking steps towards progress. As long as it's not used as a political tool Kaiti

I am so happy that this Amber alert has gotten to be as wide spread as it has. This Amber girl was taken about 35 miles from where we live and was taken to the same town my ex MIL lives in. I can't imagine loses a child especially that way. I hope it can help as many children as possible.

Another important program I reccomend is Code Adam. It was created by John Walsh of America's Most Wanted, who tragically lost his little boy Adam to a pedophile murderer 23 years ago. Walmarts have the Code Adam alert, which means that when someone reports their child lost in the store, the whole store is locked down, so no one can leave. Parents would have to do the reporting immediately.
Anne, if they don't have it in the UK, I highly recommend it while you're on the road to getting the Amber Alert.
Whenever my ds and I see a child unattended, we tell the store employees so they can find the parent(s). It blows me away when I see kids without parents in the stores. I expect to see some parent come running up to their poor lost child and I am upset by how many times that doesn't happen. Why don't these parents get it?

I don't think the parents do get it. It's the NOT GONNA HAPPEN TO ME mentality. I let my daughter, who is 9, go put a couple of things back for me yesterday at walmart. I could see her, but she was down an isle.
Same thing with some of the parents i work with. I know that paying for care adds up, but we are very reasonable, tops to pay is $8.00 a day, the kids eat, get their homework done, play inside, play outside, we have special things that they can do, so that way they don't feel like they are being "Babysat" , especially the older kids.
I don't know, everything has gotten so out of control, I dread the kids growing up. So that being said. I'm glad that the Adam alert was initiated, thankfully we've never been in a store while it was going on though.
Have a nice night Kaiti

Kaiti, good suggestion, I like the idea of this Amber Alert being part of this site, it´s so important to partisipate and take care of other´s too. Like Amsmom, I dont like the fiew of child wondering around alone,it give´s me bad dreams. We were on Legoland last summer(Danmark) and in a shop, I saw a little child crying in there all alone. I went there and she was Finnish , looking for her mom. After a while, the mother came to us and wasnt even worried That´s silly, anything could have happend . Just the thought that my child would be missing and this lady should see her , no help from there, I´am shure. So; a big WOW for taking care of other´s, humanity rule´s!! Marja

I worked in retail management for ten years, and it was amazing to me the number of children just wandering. One of the things I told Katie was that if we ever got separated at the mall, to go into the nearest store and go behind the register and ask for help. If someone's behind the register, they work there, and it's not as risky as asking any strange adult to help you find your mom. She's done it several times, and it's always worked for her.

That's a good idea Mary, I never thought about that.
I did see that you can tell your child to go to another adult with children to get help, but I like that idea better
