This morning I was cleaning out Pauls jacket so I could wash it.He had the usual junk but then I noticed some paperwork from the district.I looked at it and said Friday they had a bomb threat and they took all the usual precautions and locked the schools down!
What was upsetting to me was,Paul didn't give me the paperwork because I would be upset by it(I was a little) but the fact that he was USED to it.No kid should ever have to get used to such violence! They have a right to be safe in school. They are there to learn.

Oh Linda!! What a "sign of the times" eh although I still don't feel that a "bomb threat" in schools should be the sign of anyone's times!! ...
It is things like this which really makes us wonder what sort of a world our kids are growing up in ...

Unfortunately, that sort of thing is becoming more common. I don't know if it's that it's always been going on and the schools just weren't aware of it OR ever since 9/11 everyone is on edge. I suspect it's the latter.
We had a similar situation at my dd's elementary school. A big lock down because there was a hostage situation going on down the street and this is sleepy Charlotte, NC!

How upsetting for Paul and you! I agree with swmom, everyone is on edge.
We too have had several local schools "locked down" due to hostage situations. Two within the last two weeks.
Unfortunately I think it will and has been happening more since 9/11.
Better to be safe than sorry! Thank goodness no one was hurt!

Well they caught an 18 year old who was making the threats. The punishment for making a threat is expulsion! Not enough in my opinion. Another student "snitched him out".The days are getting nice and this kid figured everyone would get to go home.

So in some perverted way this kid felt he was doing "everyone a favour" ... Oh goodness!! ... Living in the UK you are probably aware that we have been bombarded by both threats and REAL bombs by the IRA for years and years ... one time when a bomb went off I had walked past the EXACT spot 3 minutes earlier! ... BUT although we are very used to being evacuated regularly from shopping centres, railway and underground stations and airports I have never heard of anything like this at a SCHOOL before! ... but from both your note Linda and the replies this seems to be becoming more commonplace! Grrrr....

Why do think that is Anne? Why in our country and not yours?

Why do think that is Anne? Why in our country and not yours? That is an interesting question !! ... Because although we in the UK get so many bombscares as a nation - it is not (to my knowledge) at all commonplace in the schools ... Is this a "sick fad" born out of 9/11 I wonder? Did it happen before 9/11 or was it just since? .... Then again OUR kids know about 9/11 (I think EVERYONE knows about 9/11) so it makes me wonder why this hasn't also become more commonplace here ... I am in "wondering" mode ... Marja ... are you there? Have you heard of anything like this in the schools in Finland? Anneke... Belgium?? ...

I live in quite little, peacefull country(o´kay, gotta knock the wood). We very rarely have any bomb-thread´s, but lately, say in latest 10 year´s there has been more than before. It´s so rare! Last year a boy set a bomb in a large mall, just for the funn, ended up killing himself and ten´s of other´s other wice, bomb´s are mostly just ment for a gang or preticcular person, they are not for public-harm. I hope it stay´s that way. I´ve never heard of a bomb in school here, all the thread´s I´ve heard have been in mall´s mostly. I´am sure this has a lot to do with 9/11 all around the world, exspecially in U.S. U.K, on the other hand, has it´s ancient history with IRA as Anne just said. Marja

We used to have bomb threats occasionally when I was in high school - back in the 70's. And when I taught in Lebanon, we had bombs for real. A few weeks ago I was subbing in a kindergarten class when they had a 'lock down drill'. All the kids had to get over in a sheltered corner and remain completely still and quiet until the all clear was given. I had to fight back tears - remembering huddling with kids under the stairs during the war, but sick to my stomach because sometimes it seems we've exchanged one type of violence for another. A couple of weeks ago all the high schools in our county were locked down - and they arrested 49 kids for selling drugs.
