I am getting hopeless. Avery has an ear infection. On Monday they gave her shots in both of her legs (at my request)instead of an oral antibiotic. She refusues to take any medicine. I know this is normal for kids, but the doctors keep telling me that I have to force her to take it. I am at a totally loss on how to do this. How do you make someone swallow? I did the thing where you hold their face like a fish and squirt it into the back of the cheeck (sp), but she still spits it out. She finds it in a drink, I even took one suggestion of putting it into Hershey's syrup (yuk!) I am starting to feel like I am hurting her, even though I know it is for her own good. The poor kid was up screaming for about 4 hours last night so we have to go in again today and I know they are going to give her something oral, and I know she will not take it. They just keep telling me I have to be more forceful. I know this is a common problem, but has anyone found anything that works? The poor girl is in pain and I am afraid her ear drum will rupture. Not to mention we are all really tired. I'd care how silly or far-fetched the idea seems, I am willing to try anything at this point! thanks...Becky

I know this sounds horrible but sometimes it is necessary. Hold the fish face until she swallows. Keep her head back and she will eventually swallow. For Tylenol give it to her in suppository form. After a few times she may rethink here stand on swallowing. Good luck, Sue

A dum question , but how about liquid antibiotic´s? those work´s for us, you can drip a little bit of orange or citron juice in it. We have also those kind of antibiotic´s that you can smelt on liquid(english?) so it´s easy to swallow. I havent have to try to force any pill´s down, I know it wuold be REALLY hard ;D Marja

They are liquid. Last night it was just Motrin, but I am going to get supositories for that.
I just have DH help me hold her down like Cat said, and we did the fish face, but I didn't stroke her throat so I am going to have to try that. I can't figure out how she manages to push it all out, or worse she will just throw up and we are back at square one.
I had the shots done this time b/c of this problem. I get worried when I know that only about 1/3 of what she perscribed is going in. All that business about superbugs and resistance alarms me.
With any luck they will be getting better and I heard that they have a ear drop for pain in the ears so maybe I'll get lucky. I sure hope so.

Well, after a few days here I am the world worst mom! Especially in Avery's eyes. The actual infection is gone, but she still has fluid in her eustaion (sp) tube, so her ears feel like they have to pop on a plane, but she doesn't know how to do it. (very painful) So, she has an unlimited supply of sugarless gum (there goes the carpet) to help ease some of the pain. Then we were given Nasonex nasial spray to help open everything up and then we have to follow up with Benedryl to dry everything up, and a Tylonel supossitory. Like I said, I have to friends in this house anymore..... She can't fight anything but the Benedryl, and I can sneak a little of a chewable into her before she realizes that it is not a Tums. She is doing lots better, and asked today if she can stop having "butt pokes" now. We are pretty much down to the Benedryl and gum at this point. Thanks for all of the suggestions. The pinching one doesn't sound like much fun, but sometimes we have to do things we don't like. I didn't want her to have a shot either, but I knew the alternative to her not taking the meds would be worse so I guess you gotta choose the lesser of the two evils. Thanks lots....Becky

;D Oh Yeah.... I'm going through this right now with my 4th grader/10yr old! He can't STAND the taste of the liquid antibotics!!!! He tells me 'NO WAY MOM!! MY CHEST INFECTION is all BETTER!" He's only taken the medicine TWICE! Needs it a full week. He says "If you make me take that stuff I'll THROW up!" He complains it's too sugary! But my BIG BABY can't swallow any pills. Makes a huge seen about trying to swallow the most tiny antihistamine pills and won't swallow antibotics pills. He's just terrible about swallowing any liquid or pills. It's so hard to treat him! I just keep telling him "This medicine is expensive and I'm not giving it for nothing!" Thank goodness it's only ONCE a day! I hate mornings...uggggg! I got a kick out of the "Butt poke line! ;D" I've been through that with him. He's had some TERRIBLE HIGH fevers and couldn't take any liquid tylenol being he would THROW it all up. We had to do the suppositories and he didn't like that either but when fever got up at 103 it was time to put that into action! Good luck...sorry I wasn't much help with a solution but know that other parents are going through the same thing might help a little? take care...madison

Madison, I feel the same way as your son about liquid meds. I try my hardest, but if it doesn't come in a pill form, I can't take it. At least pills are no problem for me. I asked my doctor about it a few months back, and she said that some of the antibiotics come in chewable form. I would like to try that, but she is allergic to all of them so that it out the window. Good Luck with him, that's gotta be hard when he is old enough to take a pill and won't. You could always try and offer him the shot....that seems to be working really well here.

I know that Amoxicillin comes in chewable form. It doesn't taste too bad, just a little sweet and a tiny bit chalky. Then again, I used to stand in front of the fridge drooling whenever they prescribed the liquid stuff for me. Apparently I was easy on Mom, in regards to taking meds.
