www.journeywoman.com/ is a site specifically for women travelling alone. You can search and likely find the name of an agency people have had good luck with in most areas. You can also send in a "travel tip" warning people about a certain agency or telling them about a different one that was great.

Anneke, YOU GO GIRL!!!! You are such a strong, brave woman, I really admire you. Did you go back to the agency yet? I am a little nervous about you going back to that part of town alone. Can you wait till your friend comes back?

I didn't even think about the "going back to the agency" part.
General rule: Don't go back to places where they've arranged for you to be killed before. 1, you're letting them know that they weren't successful, and 2, you're giving them the opportunity to try again. If you must go, take someone with power with you. Not even just your friend. There was 3 guys, remember?

Anneke, I agree with Allanque about taking big, strong people with you when you go back to the agency. Can some people from your host family go with you? I am afraid that those a**holes that hurt you will be lurking around. Actually, if the police there were worth anything, they should go with you, but I know they were no help at all.

Anneke, extra hugs from here {{{{{{}}}}}}}
I can only imagine the fear you had, but from what I have seen of you over the last year, you are a tough lady and won't let this get to you.
My DH does a lot of travelling. He said, without exception, that you MUST call your embassy in Peru to let them know what happened. Those creeps wanted your visa and your passport, so they will likely go after other foreigners as well.
You were too tough for them, but the next young lady who goes to visit may not be like you. PLEASE, call the embassy. If you don't have that number handy, let us know and we will find it for you somehow.
Again, extra hugs and lots of family love from all of us here. {{{{{{{ }}}}}}}}
