YIKES! I had a scary morning!! ... My 16 year old Sam has always enjoyed a bit of cooking ... particularly cake baking ... But this morning he rang me at work (he doesn't return to college until Wednesday) and said "Mum ... have we got any bacon?" ... Anyway I said yes we had but it was in the freezer and I talked him through defrosting it in the microwave ... That was FINE ... I then hung up with reminders of being VERY careful whilst cooking it etc etc (the usual!) 10 minutes later he rang again ... "Mum ... I just set all the smoke alarms off ... how do I turn them off ?" ... YIKES!!! What do you MEAN you just set all the smoke alarms off ... just from cooking a little bit of bacon ??!! But NO we don't want the smoke alarms "turned off" either!! My boss was with me at the time I got the call ... She said to me "You call him back in FIVE MINUTES and no longer to check on him!" ... I said "I feel so helpless sitting here 2.5 miles away from home with my son asking me how to turn the smoke alarms off!" Anyway ... all was fine ... but it sure gave me some really NERVOUS minutes this morning!!

LOL Anne
That is just too funny !!! Gabriel also enjoys a bit of cooking, baking in particular. He loves to make cakes, cookies and pies. I have been trying to teach him how to make scrambled eggs but he claims he is afraid of getting burned on the stove....Go figure!!!

LOL... Anne ;D
I have been dying for him to learn how to do scrambled eggs because this way I won't have to wake up so early on Saturdays to make him breakfast...Hmm...I wonder if this is why he refuses to learn....Come to think about...I don't think I buy that "I'm afraid of the stove" thing anymore....LOL
;D ;D ;D ;D

Jared was turned off to the stove after catching the knife handle on fire that time..he knows how to scramble eggs in the nuker but ;D ;D I doubt that he would pick that for breakfast on the weekends if I were to sleep in (like thats ever gonna happen) He would devour the left over pizza or chips or cookies or whatever happened to be in the cupboard that he wanted. ;D

Mmmm...scrambled eggs on a flour tortilla with salsa and cheese. Yummy.
My problem with cooking was that I wouldn't pay enough attention and skip over things in the recipe. Cornbread doesn't rise when you forget the baking powder or soda or whatever it is.

Alla ;D Good point ;D Anne, YIKES, so you tell me it isint getting any better by getting older Sami is totally interested of cooking too, expecially baking(go figure)... but he has had his own adventure´s in kitchen One time he had to spend a little time all alone(I had to go and dad wasnt back yet) so I left him with all he need´s and end up getting a call from him: "yeah eveything is alright, I´am making dinner for myself " The other time was when he decided to make scrambled egg´s to his sister´s... It´s nice to know that he doesnt think cooking is only female´s job, but..... ;D

Cami is forbidden from doing anything with the stove when home alone. Microwave only! This way I know it will cut off on it's on. She's the world's worst at putting on soup or noodles or something to boil and then disappearing back to the computer room or living room, getting distracted of course, and forgetting about the stuff!

I messed up the copper bottom of one of my best pans because I boiled it dry.
Restricting them to the microwave is no guarantee though.
One of my (kinda distant) cousins was lighting alcohol vapors in a bottle. His parents were leaving the house to go for a walk and told him to stop. He put a potato in the microwave for 99:99, figuring he'd grab it when it was done. Then he decided to light the alcohol vapors one more time. He knocked the bottle over on the table. The tablecloth caught on fire. So, while he's busy trying to deal with that, the microwave was still going...and going...and going...until it shorted out. He was in tears when his parents came home.

Alla ..your kinda distant cousin needed to be in tears before his parents left..and not from frustration. ;D

Michael can't be bothered with cooking... too much time. He doesn't bother with the microwave either.
Shaun once put an English Muffin in the microwave for ? some time... there was 37 minutes left on the timer when I woke up to the smoke alarms and the smoke banked 4 feet from the ceiling! He was 4 at the time.
Now... Patrick cooks everthing from scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes to stir fry chicken and rice. He makes pizzas and cookies, crescent rolls. Just about anything we eat, he will cook or bake... except using the grill.
Michael will help on the grill if he is in the mood.
Shaun is learning to use the stove... he is getting good at grilled cheese sandwiches and scrambled eggs so far.
The are all much better than I am... I won't go near the grill, and I would prefer to stay as far as possible from the stove and oven too! Even the microwave frustrates me. If it doesn't have golden arches on the package, I probably didn't have anything to do with getting it onto the dinner table!

I have decided that there are more important things than teaching mine how to cook in the kitchen. I'd rather teach mine how to clean the kitchen. ;D
