I don't know if this is a suggestion or a question...
Recently we had a thread titled "Scary or hurtful posts" that was confusing to me, and apparently to others judging from the responses. I wasn't sure if it was posted to prevent such posts or because some had already occurred; I was guessing it was in reference to the children taking antidepressant thread. When I saw the reference recently that the Paxil post had been taken off initially, it made me wonder .....why??
We have much diversity of opinion and approach to dealing with ADHD on this site, but I view that as a very positive thing. And it should not be scary to us to hear differing opinions or information. There are no magic answers for ADHD and all of our kids are so different, so we all have different approaches. And there are positive and negative things about whatever we choose. If there is something negative about a treatment choice, then we have to take that into consideration no matter how alarming it may feel.
So my suggestion is this: If someone is concerned about a post, why don't you just post a response indicating your concerns, e.g. the research design was faulty, this publication does not have a good reputation, that incident represents one out of 400 billion kids who have used this, etc. Then we can all factor that into how much weight we give the post. We all come into this knowing none of us are trained experts...we are all just sharing opinions and what we have read or observed with our own children so everything here needs to be taken in that context. I know for certain that if my child was taking Paxil I would most certainly have wanted to know that information. Would that make me stop immediately? Of course not. But it would send me to do research, to the phone to call my doctor, and let me weigh that information and make a decision. And that seems to me to be the purpose of this site.
If there are threads posted that are obviously malicious or are trying to sell certain products, etc., then yes they should be deleted. But otherwise, I think the controversial topics are some of our best threads.
If I have misunderstood this whole thing, then I'll just say....nevermind. This site is great; it lets my indulge my obsession with finding something to help my son:-) On my worst days, it's great to have a group of friends who I know will understand exactly what I am talking about. Thanks for all the work that I know goes on behind the scenes.
