I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what to expect at your first visit to a psychiatrist...will he prescribe meds after the first visit?

Scarlet, I just said hi to you on your other thread, but welcome again The route of evaluation changes really much, regarding where you live, how old are you(the one who need´s evaluation) and with what way you start. I dont think anyone will give you mned´s right after first app, and if they do... I suggest you to get an other opinion! i hope someone from U.S can help you more in this.....someone....

Both my friend & I are pretty sure we have adhd, were going to see a psychiatrist together. She's been to a neurologist and her mom is a counselor. I'm 15 and she's 17.

Hi Scarlett and welcome!
I can only answer for how my daughter was diagnosed almost seven years ago. We started with her school's psychologist. She gave a long questionare to me and to my daughter's teacher for both of us to complete. It had many, many questions as to the behavior of my daughter, her ability to concentrate, stay on task, control impuleses, things of that nature. We answered them independently and turned them back over to the psych for comparison and review. Both of us answered enough of the questions to indicate Cami (my daughter) had ADHD, so her " Dx" was ADHD. I then took it one step further and had her personal physician see her. He too gave me a questionare to complete and for him to review when done. He then met with Cami a series of times to just "talk" with her observing her behavior while doing so. After all that he agreed with the school psych's dx and the rest is history.

Hi scarlett ... I am in the UK so can only talk on how things were for us here ... but my son who is now 17 was diagnosed at 13 and he had 15 hours + (spread over a few sessions) of research and testing before meds were even mentioned... in addition were questionnaires for me, his teachers and everyone who knew him ...
After that we (he and me and dh) were called in for a 2 hour meeting and then ... and ONLY then were meds mentioned ... and then introduced....
so if the US is like the UK this will NOT happen quickly!! ... be prepared to spend a LOT of hours with the psychiatrist and his staff !! ... GOOD LUCK!!

My daughters psychiatrist did a test call a "cpt" test (computer processing test I think it stands for) on my sd... Not sure what it entailed as I was not in the room though, I think the gist was something would pop up on computer screen and she had to identify what it was before it changed....
We also did a "connors test" which is basically parents, and teachers filling out a questioneer on behaviors etc,. and the answers being compared to each other... Good luck!

We had four visits before our doc ever gave us the results (5th visit). We filled out questionnaires and DS did a CPT (Catseye, it's a Continuous Performance Test). Even after he gave us the results, the meds were just part of a list of recommendations. I think if we would have asked for a prescription, he would have given it to us then.
