How many tries before you found the right medication and dosage for your ADHD person? I am not worried yet as my older son had to adjust dosages a few times to get it right; I am just curious as to the "average" attempts. Also, anyone have some suggestions for getting a three year old to take the medicine? We tried applesauce and pudding. Tapioca worked for almost a week; now, all we hear is screaming and we both have to feed him to get it down. (One holds him; the other feeds) We just swithched to Adderall, which comes in a chewable form, so maybe that will help, but I thought I should find some suggestions in case it doesn't. ...and if I get "that look" from anyone else today because i have a toddler on medication, I am gonna take him off meds and send him home with them!!!!! That'll fix 'em!

Well for us it was the first med we tried was the best. Our doc gave us a perscription of adderall 10mg, and had us start him off with 1/2 pill (5mg) then each week go up 5 mg untill the teacher and I saw the best results, then stop. we stoped at 15mg then when the school day got longer we went up to 20mg. He stayed there untill this last year when we went to 30mg. He was 8 when we started and is now 15.

I have been there and the idea is very tempting!!! ;D ;D As far as meds we were one of the "lucky ones" who got it right the first time.

( Someone on line here taught Jared how to float a pill (like a boat) on his tongue...okay who was it?? You take a drink first then put the pill in and float it then take another drink..if I remember right...someone needs to back me up tho.. Jared had a horrible time with pills till then and it worked like a charm.

We're still working on it. First was Strattera - immediate terrible headaches, then , then came Adderal XR- ok with concentration, terrible with social behavior (violent rages after it wore off), then came Concerta - weight loss and rash no affect on concentration, seemed depressed, then came Focalin - good for concentration, but has a rollercoaster day because it only lasts about 2 hours of good concentration, now he was diagnosed with anxiety and is taking risperdal in addition to his Focalin. We will be switching to Focalin XR when school starts. I think the one miracle that happened from this is his ability to swallow medicines. He is quite proud of the fact that he can swallow 2 or three pills at a time if needed. One time he even swallowed one of those chewable cold tablets, you know the one the size of a dime? I told him that he could chew that one Miles

We had 4 tries - ritalin worked, but caused terrible insomnia, which mimicked the ADHD - Adderall was awful with rebound and emotional lability, as was Concerta. We tried strattera about 4 months after it was approved (2003) and it has been a godsend. He's never had trouble taking the pills and is really good at it. He does the drink, pill, drink, too.
The only concern I'd have putting a 3 yo on meds is that most meds have been tested in kids aged 6 and up. No data on younger ones. I'd be worried about the safety of meds in a child that young (I work in the pharma industry). Otherwise, you do what is best for your child and the family. Good luck. Kris
