I'm new and need help. I have a 10 year old son named Jordan who I suspect could be ADD. He is a very, very intelligent child. I don't say this to brag, but to give some insight. He is a straight A student, tested highest in the 4th grade in math, highest in the 4th grade in language, and second highest in reading. He is also in the school's gifted and talented program. However, he has trouble concentrating in school. There are 27 kids in his class, and often 26 will go home with no homework, but Jordan will spend 2 hours on homework. The other day, he was the only kid in the class who couldn't finish a reading quiz when given 40 min. If he could take the quiz orally, he would be done in no time, but he has great trouble with writing. He knows the answers, but it's like something between the brain and the hand breaks down. He learns very quickly, can tell you all he knows orally, but has trouble getting it on paper. His teacher says he stares a lot in class. When I ask Jordan what the problem is, he says he is tired, yet he gets plenty of sleep. I'm scared to death of medicating him, yet I thought if I could get him diagonised, then the school would not be able to put time constraints on him during tests. Does this sound like an ADD child? Where do I start?
Thanks, Tammy

Tammy and welcome to our family I think I would start with Jordan's teacher and see what she has to say. They are usually the first to notice anything. To me Jordan does sound like he might be ADD but it is just my opinion. If he does get tested and is ADD...you can implement a 504 plan. Like I said before...start with the teacher.

Tammy and welcome!! First of all I would have your ds tested at school to see if he has a learning disablility. I see that your son is very bright and sometimes a LD will mimick ADHD. Sounds like it could be a written expression LD. First thing you need to do is write a letter to the school requesting that your son has testing done to see if there are any learning disablilities and also at that time request testing to see if your child has ADHD. Hopefully it will get done before the end of the school year. If you need any help let us know or here is a good website to visit: www.schwab.org it is a great site for LD and they have some ADHD info there as well....let us know what happens and good luck

You just described my kid and his problems exactly - except he's in second grade. I think there's some kind of disconnect between the brain and the hand too. The doctor gives us concerta. It does help him get more work done but not all and it still takes him much much longer than the average Joe to complete anything written. (He needs fill in the blank tests.) Not something that should be happening with someone with such a high IQ. Don't know the answer to the problem. The school did do an OT eval but she says he's perfectly normal.
