My dd sees a Ped Neuro for her ADD and takes 54 mg of Concerta. She has an IEP and sees a Social Worker twice a month at school.
I still have concerns about her emotional health. She does not express emotions openly unless it is anger or frustration. Otherwise she acts as if everything is fine in her life even when teachers and I are on her case because she is not keeping up in school or following her responsibilities at home. She is entering middle school in the fall and the peer pressure is only going to get worse. I have decided to seek out a mental health expert in order to be proactive with her emotional well being.
My question is what kind of doctor should I look for? Should it be a Neuropsych? A regular psychologist? A psychiatrist? A therapist? A social worker? I really don't know the differences between them other than a Psychiatrist is an MD. I am looking for someone who can monitor her, who she feels safe with, who can understand the ADD component of her life. Any suggestions? I have no experience with this type of doctor. Thanks!
Chris

Chris...I would ask the social worker at school for a referral. This person knows your dd and would know who could help her.

I was looking for a psychiatrist in Januay to be a support person for my son. He seemed very depressed at the time. My insurance company has a list online of professionals in your area. Seems each has a secendary specialty listed. If I were to actually take my son to one, I will choose someone who has training in ADHD and children.
I didn't know the difference between psychiatrist and psychologist so asked my insurance company which I should be looking at. I was told the only difference between the two is a psychiatrist can prescribe medication and a psychologist can't.

I´d choose psychiatrist or therapist... if support and listening ear is all he need´s; i´d take my chance´s with therapist, but if you think there might be medicating on question, then it should be psychiatrist... Mayby you´re insurance company could help you as amcfanny told
