 Our peds neurologist closed his practice.  Long story, but now we're looking for a new peds neurologist or developmental pediatrician. So far, I've found one that isn't accepting new patients, one that has a year or longer waiting list, one that has a waiting list until Sept., one that has one until July, and one that has an appt. in June. I've made the appts for June and July (we shall see if I can do any better). The one in June is with a developmental pediatrician. She would evaluate T all over again (not a bad idea, since it's been 4 yrs and now his counselor thinks he's really Aspergers - which I doubt - another long story), but the kicker is that she doesn't take ANY insurance. Get this: 1st new pt. visit: $500 kid alone follow-up: $195 Parents alone follow-up: $375 Future follow-ups: $195 YIKES!!  Now don't get me wrong, I'll spend it for my kids' benefit, but honestly, don't you think that's a bit excessive? The thing is, she is one of only 2 dev. peds in our area, and the other (who takes our insurance) is the one with the year-long waiting list! The one for July is a peds neurologist affiliated with St. Christopher's Hospital for children (in Phila). The satellite site is local. Some of the satellites take our insurance, but I'm not sure this one does...  What's the deal? Does everyone else have this much trouble finding qualified MDs to treat their kids? I don't get it! The thing is, I'm in a metropolitan area (between Phila/NYC), where you'd think there'd be more? Kris

Seems that the long wait is par for the course. Most of the psychiatrists here have a 2 month or longer waiting list. One will take one verson of the medical card, but it is the version that no one else will take. The only way I got my kid in a bit quicker was I put him in the partial hospitalization program where he had to see someone within 3 days. He has had a few appointments, but it is still 6-8 weeks between them.

WOW! I thought sd's appts were high! I dont have the exact figures in front of me, but it went something like this 1st appt parents only 260.00 2nd appt child 185.00 cpt test 100.00 something about eval 150.00 Final appt 185.00 I must be off somewhere, as the 3 appts were going to cost 960.00 total.... No they dont take ANY insurance, but supposibly they will bill my insurance for us... Hopefully the insurance will be on the ball and get that back to us quickly... Although I STILL haven gotten sd's money from the orthodontist (same situation didnt take insurance and cost us 1500 that we are SUPPOSED to get back that was over 2 months ago) yet... Our income tax refund is GONE due to the orthodontist! And we didnt get anything for us... I know we talked about the asperbergers thing, where are you at? (pm me if you want) where I am at BECAUSE the school thinks sd is autistic we get 220.00 a month- yep that is what is paying for her psychologist, luckily I have been saving that money... Anyway there is a benefit, at least in my case, of letting the school call her autistic... We didnt have to have a dr say it either, just the school... |

Catseye: I doubt I'm eligible for any gov't money...the counselor (psychologist) said (after 4 30-min visits) that she thinks he has Aspergers. Nobody else, including the school and his peds neurologist, has ever said anything about that. I am in Bucks Co., PA (about 45 mins from Phila). Like I said, I've found plenty of satellite sites with docs that take our insurance, but they're either far away, have long waiting lists, or both. Geez, what are these kids supposed to do? Kris |

i've been doing some reading, and do you know that depending on the diagnosis, your child may be eligeble for SSI. You might check into it if your bills are going to be that high. Could help out some.
