I've not been posting for awhile because things have been so hectic but I need some info. What type of doctor treats tic disorders? We have been seeing a behavior pediatrician for over a year and he's not helping. My daughter now has motor tics and a vocal tic since increasing her Ritalin LA from 10 mg to 20 mg.Her ADHD is under control but the tics are getting bad.All the stimulants(and Strattera) have caused motor tics but this is the first vocal tic.She is grunting.I'm afraid they'll become permanent.Should I carry her to a child psychiatrist or a neurologist?

hi brenda, good to hear from you. since you say the tics started with meds, whichever dr you take her to will probably try taking her off the meds to see if they stop. my ds9 developed tics with various meds and they stopped when the meds were stopped. i'm sorry that the meds are helping the adhd, but causing tics. that is such a difficult situation to be in. if you didnt know what the tics were from i would say go to a neurologist to rule out a neurological disorder. a good child psychiatrist can help you find the right medication that wont cause tics, but unfortunately it will be by trial and error, which you have probably already been through. many good neurologists can prescribe meds accurately too, but in my experience, our psychiatrist has truly been a godsend. good luck and keep us posted.

I'm not anygood with the meds part of it, but I was just wondering, and if this sounds stupid, let me know. Is she under more stress, or feel overwhelmed? A boy at our program blinks almost non-stop and chews on his fingers when he is really stressed. Sorry, not much of a help.

I am sorry, I cant even help here! My sd has had a vocal tic, but it has nothing to do with medication... Sd has had it since 1 1/2 years old (even earlier so I am told)... I dont have any idea, why she has it, and we havent really investigated it...
In your situation I would say it might be a side effect of the medication... What does the dr say? If he is ignoring your concerns, can you get a second opinion?
I wish I could help more!~

Thanks for replying all.I called her dr and he talked with a neurologist he knows and wants her to start haldol and stay on ritalin.I'm afraid of giving her meds for side effects of other meds.Haldol is a serious drug to give a child but what else can I do?She needs the Ritalin for her ADHD.

oh brenda, that worries me too. i dont think haldol is a good idea at all for a child. also i agree that i wouldnt want to give meds to stop a side effect of another med. do you know of a child psychiatrist you can go to? i think you need to get a 2nd opinion. good luck and please keep us posted.

Hey Brenda, I personally would be reading any information that I could concerning anything that the drs. prescribe. Look at the pros and cons. If the cons are too big DON"T do it. I hate to sound so negative, but if you don't want to give a med because it is dealing with the side effect of another I really think that you shouldn't. I wish that I could be of more help. Know that we are thinking and praying for you

Brenda I agree with kaiti, and amsmom, IF you are uncomfortable with the idea, then get a 2nd opinion... Trust those mom instincts! Good luck

Man.. let's treat the side effect of one medication with another medication!! GAD!! I don't like it either.. How bad is she off meds? How old is she? Have you gone through all the meds? concerta, adderal, etc? And yes they can become permanent.. and how dare a neurologist prescribe medication without even seeing the child!!!! Not good Denise

Brenda I can feel your frustration here!! ... I sure do agree with a "2nd Opinion" here though ... because it must feel like you are chasing your tail around in circles right now!! ... You may well find that a fresh opinion could open up fresh ideas altogether which in turn can hopefully get things "right" for your daughter.... I personally lean towards the psychiatrist rather than a neurologist .... but that is just me speaking personally... I know I am being no help whatsoever but am one of the many who is right here for you!! ... and just hoping you find the "right" solution for your daughter. I am sure you will ... but it might take more trial and error before you get there! Brenda!

Thanks AnneM.I am having a hard time finding a psychiatrist.I called her ped today for a referral and he told me I could call Mental Health and said the Behavior Pediatrician she's going to is very experienced with ADHD.It's hard seeing her making that weird noise.Kids are starting to ask her to stop and she tells them she can't.Today she had a substitute teacher and she asked who was making noises.Stephanie told her she couldn't stop.Maybe I should give haldol a try. Linda,Haldol is an antipsychotic med.
