We are seeing the doctor tomorrow with my 6 year old who was recently diagnosed with ADHD. He is on strattera and I want to get him off. Anyone have any ways to discuss that with the doc. and any side affects I should be worried about coming of strattera?

Hi Kendra and welcome to the forums. I think that if you want your 6-year-old child off Strattera, then you just tell your doctor that. You are the parent and no one can make your family take anything. It may take a while to wean off it (unlike stimulants), and your doctor and pharmacist may be best at telling you how to go about that and what side effects, if any to expect.

My son had no problems coming off of Strattera, but we went straight from the Strattera to a stim.
Just tell the doctor you are not pleased with the Strattera and would like for him to be taken off. Like Barry said - it is your decision. May I ask what you dislike about the Strattera?

The strattera doesn't seem to be helping and I'd rather not have him take it if it doesn't help.
This coupled with the fact that he has Asthma and a colon disease that cause him to take medicine I'd rather have him on the least amount of medicine possible. I hate feeling like I'm pumping pills into him day in and day out.

hi kendra, welcome to the forums. we are so glad you are here. the dr should not have any problem explaining to you how to get your ds off of strattera. sorry, that is one i dont have experience with. my son had to be weaned off of meds when he stopped them in the past, but i'm not familiar with what is needed with strattera. good, good luck to you at the appt, honey. come back and let us know how both you and your little guy are doing. lots of hugs to you (((((((kendra and son)))))))

Hi Kendra Lot´s of good luck to you at the appt. today. Like you´ve already been told, it´s your decicion, you can stop this if you want, your doc will be the best to tell how, but he cant decide it for you. I hope it goes well with you These decicion´s are always so hard to make, we all have to think all the pro´s and con´s and then make the decicion.... but that´s what parent´s do, their best to their kid´s

Ok so we saw the doctor today and I told him that the strattera wasn't working, and he suggested we add ritalin to the mix. So he wrote us a prescription for ritalin XR and we're supposed to try that, however I don't forsee much difference. Sure the ritalin helped last time, but it made my baby cry all the time, and I'm not willing to deal with that, and neither is he. I would just rather go the non-med route. Has anyone had any luck with that?

There is a "natural alternatives" forum on our site... I am sorry I am not knowledgable in the alternatives, but many people who come here are.... I hope they can help... Good luck
