After my grand-father's near fatal car accident six years ago his doctor put him on Ritalin to help keep him alert and focused. From what I understand it helps anyone focus better, but does the opposite with the hyperness part. In other words, if you are ADHD it helps calm you down. If you are not, it gives you energy.

This is interesting Christy and I think maybe "knocks the nail on the head" ... & I have to say that ritalin etc. has always calmed Sam down tremendously ... and could in fact definitely be the fundamental difference between the effect of a non-adhd'er taking it and an adhd'er ....

From what I have learned the government no longer uses these drugs in war time..that ended with nam. As for putting them in diet pills..I seriously doubt that they would put a classed narcotic in over the counter pills. Depending on the doctor and what they prescribed for a diet then a doctor might do that..knowing that they have to fill out paperwork for the government on why they prescibe classed narcotics I seriously doubt a doctor would risk it. Most obese people are high risk for other things like heart problems and I doubt a Dr would prescribe an amphetamine for high risk patients. They have even promoted taking ephedra out of diet aids why would they leave a classed narc in them if ephedra is out? It may be something that has one or more of the same components but not all the components of the drug...who knows with all the pills out there today. Maybe I will ask doc when we go on the 23rd. It does bring about more questions? Alot of them. the more you think the more you wander.

With people who don't have ADHD it can be used as a form of speed if you will. It peps you up, makes you jittery, full of energy and raring to go. This is why the keep it under lock and key at school. I have known of times in the past where high school kids that didn't like or didn't want to take it would sell it to non-ADHDrs as speed for them. It is disturbing. I know that certain prescription diet aids are stimulants as well as Ritalin being a stimulant. Stimulants decrease your appetite. But I doubt that the diet meds have all the same components as Ritalin.

i've also heard that if you don't need ritalin, it will act as an upper. if you're tired and are stimulated, i'd think you'd automatically focus better because you aren't as tired. i've also heard that adhd aren't supposed to be accepted into the army. but i know two boys who were told by the recruiters to not mention it. i have a huge problem with this, would you want to be next to one of our kids in a fox hole and they aren't on meds? if some guy is supposed to have my kids' back, he better be focused! karen

Add my name to the list of those who've heard that stimulants help everyone, ADDers and non-ADDers alike, to focus. I don't remember reading if it causes hyperactivity in non-ADDers. I'm sure you've all heard people say that Ritalin and cocaine can be used interchangeably in studies; they are the same. (I've read this in a couple of different sources.)

methylphenidate and all other stimulants are basically speed. They are stimulants and will act as such in non-adhd-ers. For adhd-ers, they help calm (ie, the opposite effect as those without adhd).
That is why they are controlled substances. They are not identical to what is in diet pills, but act the same way (dexephenedrine is used for dieting). They are not found in the over-the-counter diet pills anymore, but physicians can still prescribe "speed" for dieting.
That is why they are abused, for the "high" (eg, energy surge) they provide.

The problem with non adhd 'rs using the drug is that they start out using it to focus..after awhile it becomes the focus..then after that there is no focus at all just the craving and need. I wouldn't recommend it as a diet aid or focus aid for anybody other than adhd 'rs. Big bad circles should be avoided..its sad that people would abuse something that does so much good for those who really need it.
