Hi Everyone -
I am at my wits end! We slowly took our 9 y/o off Paxil 3 weeks ago. I knew that it took a while for the med to completely leave the system. Well......there is no doubt in my mind (or my husband's) that it's out of his system!
He acts fidgety, doesn't pay attention, is making mistakes, forgetting things, and most of all....is completely over emotional (cries at everything!). All these syptoms are exactly the same before any meds!
We just moved to AZ and our old peds doc in CO has no referrals for us. The last two days have been a living (you know what) for all of us. My husband doesn't even want to be around him right now and I can honestly say I don't blame him.
We need to find a doctor PRONTO but I don't know where to turn? Should I phone our insurance mental health office? The local hospital? We have the written evaluation and testing results from the child psychologist, so there is no need to "start over". Our son has even asked tonight (after a REALLY rough day) if we can find a doctor and get on another med!
I know we don't want the Paxil again, but I really need to know where to start to find another doctor PRONTO. I know it's an immediate need when our son asks for help!

tiniree,
Was your 9 year-old diagnosed with ADD? And does he suffer from anxiety? I am just wondering why he was on Paxil as that is not usually prescribed to treat add - but rather anxiety.
Have you called the health insurance company? They may be able to give you a list of doctors - pediatric psychologists or neurologists, etc.
Also - I'm sure the move could be magnifying some of the symptoms as well. I know that many children go through a lot of emotions during a big change in their lives.
Keep us posted and good luck!

Elizabeth -
Yes her was dx 1.5 years ago with Mild-Mod ADHD Combined. Added to that, he tests out in the gifted/talented range (a double whammy!).
I'm sure that the move has magnified the symptoms and believe me, we thought long and hard about taking him off the Paxil just now. We did because we wanted to get him off before school started and to make any changes needed as we didn't want to keep him on Paxil and had planned on changing meds anyway.
Yes, the Paxil was to help treat his anxiety. He gets so "flustered" that the Paxil actually helped (at the begining) to calm him enough so that he could concentrate better.
I plan on calling our local Children's Hospital tomorrow to see about a referral in our area and we'll take it from there.

Hi Marie, Have you heard anymore? I hope so, it can be so worrisome for a child moving. Our landlord is delling our property so we are in a waiting game as far as not knowing if we are going to have to move. The kids are looking and telling me where they DON"T want to go Good luck and I hope he's feeling a bit easier now Kaiti
