I'm trying to find someone to evaluate my child (inattentive...). The school psych did an initial interview with me, and connor's tests, but then she had the nerve to retire. I'm waiting on a final report, but don't know if I'll ever get one. I was hoping she would give me more direction, but feel that I've been dropped from her mind. I don't know who to go to. My pediatrician (who's from my old neighborhood about 25 miles away)recommended someone who isn't in my ins. plan. We moved to Monroe (michigan) in December, so I don't have a whole lot of resources. I called my new family doc (I've seen him once and was impressed) to get some recommendations, and they said that he does the evals himself. Part of me says "why not give him a chance, he seemed great", and part of me says " Does he know what he's doing?... it's not his specialty". Our appointment is next week. Any thoughts?

I'd say give him a shot. We went to an allergist for Mikey. He said that he sees alot of kids that are refered to him that he refers on, BUT he explained what wasn't expalined before, as he is ADHD himself. That is why he went into the profession. He wanted a more natural approach if he could help it, so he did the allergist thing, but he knew with the nuerological stuff, what was what.
Good luck and let us know how it turns out. BTW Have you done a internet search? You probably already have, but when I have, I have seen there where Doc's close by that I hadn't heard about because they were smaller and not specifically affiliated with any hospital or other medical centers.
Luck again! Kaiti

Bunny I know you have a little different way of dx than us, but your family-doc can start this if he/she need´s some wurther eval, than doc can direct you to a neuropsych. or neurologist Here it´s usually neurologist who do the dx and med-prespriction´s. Good luck.

You might try calling your insurance company and explaining the situation. I called mine and told them that the school thought that my son might be adhd and needed evaluation and that I wanted an independent evaluation and what would the insurance company suggest? They sent me to a mental health group who did the evalualtion along with some testing.

Bunny
Our pediatrician referred us to a neuropsychologist for an eval (she refuses to make a diagnosis herself) who was not in our plan. Actually our insurance plan didn't cover ANY neuropsychologist. We went ahead and did it - it was a lot of money we didn't really have - but it was well worth it. The evaluation was so extensive and it made me feel comfortable that we were able to rule out some other possibilities and keep an eye on other things, etc. I just know from my best friend's child - who was originally diagnosed add - that sometimes it isn't as easy to make a diagnosis - there are so many disorders that share add symptoms - along with other comorbids that may need to be kept in mind when prescribing stimulants, etc (her son actually wasn't add but had a different disorder that shares many of the add symptoms - but it took over 4 years to get from add to where they are now) - . For me, since meds were involved, I really wanted a comprehensive diagnosis.
Good luck! I definitely would start with your family doctor and see where that leads!
