I have been contemplating taking my my son, Jarrett(7), to a Developmental Pediatrics center that I have heard good things about. He has never gone through any battery of tests during his diagnosis process. His regular ped diagnosed him with a Connor's test. My questions are, what kind of testing will they (or should they) do on him? How long will it take? Will it be terribly expensive? I am wondering if my insurance will pay on any of this. I know in my handbook it says they will exclude benefits for "Charges for the treatment of mental and nervous disorders or chemical dependency." I was wanting to call the insurance company and ask some questions to see exactly what that meant. I mean, ADHD isn't a mental disorder, right? It's more of a learning disability? Does that mean they won't cover a psychologist? And if they don't, to see if there was a way around it (physician referral, etc.) But it occurred to me that I really don't even know what type of services Jarrett will be receiving. So I don't know what kind of questions to ask my insurance company. Could those of you who have had more complete testings and diagnoses maybe give me a few hints of what to expect? I am a single mom receiving NO help from my ex, so things are a little tight. ANY assistance that I could take advantage of through this process would be helpful. My insurance only covers regular doctors at 70% with a $500 deductible. Does anyone know of any other assistance I could look into?

jdmom, I'm a single mom too and know very well how tight things must be for you. In Florida we have a great diagnostic program through the public schools that is free. Can you check with the school system to see if there is any such program where you are? My ds8 went through their assessment and dx program before entering kindergarten. They did a psychological assessment, a gross and fine motor assessment, a speech and vocabulary evaluation and a developmental evaluation of personal care skills. I hope there is such a program for you, it was very comprehensive. If not, it sounds like your insurance may pay for psychological counseling. I would call the insurance company and ask them about coverage for a psychiatrist, psychologist and the developmental pediatrics center. Best of luck jdmom, keep us posted!!!

When you know who is going to do the testing, ask them for the "diagnosis code", then give that code to your insurance and they will be able to tell you if/how much is covered for you...
Unfortunately we have awesome insurance, and it was NOT covered for us...
I agree with amsmom that the school may be a good alternative for you... Good luck
