Well how have you all gotten the doctor to listen to you? I have been dealing with a doctor for my son (not for adhd) and he has been dismissive of my concerns. All tests so far have come back negative, but he has not done a simple blood test that for me would settle the matter. Instead he did a much more invasive test.. an endoscopy, which meant he had to have general anesthesia. This is a diet related condition that we are testing for and now that he is eating the food in question he is losing weight and having other symptoms.. So what are your best techniques? When I called for the latest test results I asked about a blood test and he apparently made no comment on it.. I don't even know if the nurse asked him about it.. Thanks! Denise

Sorka My experience come´s mainly from working with doctor´s, and trust me; if he doesn´t listen then he doesn´t . You´d better get a new one ;D. Seems like confersational- and relationship-skill´s dont belong to doctor´s studie´s, atleast not for all of them ;D. sometime´s you just have to DEMAND, and tell him nicely that he is not the only one you can pick;D Good luck for you, I hope you´ll get figured out what´s wrong with that little boy! It's really hard to get a doctor's attention if you're not right there. I had a stupid thing where I wanted to get out a gym membership because I'd hurt my back and I had to call the office five times. After that experience, I guess I'd probably make an appointment if I felt my concerns weren't being addressed. I know what you mean about these invasive procedures -- I might have to have a bronchoscopy, but the doctor's been responsive to my desire to avoid it. Hope you get through to him. christie

I would either make an appt. or call and ask that he give you a call as soon as his schedule allows. If you do not get any where with either of these, if the tests have been done ask that they mail you a copy of the results or go in and get a copy. They have to give them to you! Shelli

I would make another appointment too. Discuss everything. If he doesn't listen then it sounds like you should look for another doctor. After all he isn't the only doctor around.
Good luck!

Here is a line I have used sucessfully in the past....
"I understand the direction you are going but as a mother I feel that this (insert name of test, problem, procedure, etc.) will give me peace of mind. Is there a medical reason not to perform this test prior to continuing? (they say yes or no...almost always no). Great....when can we schedule it for?"
It's a very polite way to assert yourself and gives them only one way out - by identifying the test or procedure as dangerous. Many doctors are used to doing things in their own set way. You must voice your opinion and if it is received with anything like annoyance or offense then change doctors - there are more important things than soothing his ego before addressing your needs.

I loved your reply to the doctor!!! LOL!!!!!! I would love to see their faces when you say this. I am a nurse and I find your reply very funny!!!!! I bet it really puts them on the spot and gets their attention. Everyone should print that out and memorize it. I know I am going to!!!! ;D Shelli
