Hi again,
Foley raised a great question in another post about genetics, so I thought I'd share a lil of what I've come across.
The genetic marker for ADHD was discovered in 1995 .The best (and easiest) way to check that out is in the US Surgeon General's Report on Mental Health (Chapter 3).For those of you that are interested, here's the original reference in APA format:
Cook,E.H.Jr.,Stein,M.A.,Krasowski,M.D.,Cox,N.J.,Olkon,D.,Kieffer,J.E., & Levanthal,B.L.(1995).Association of attention-deficit disorder and the dopamine transporter gene.American Journal of Human Genetics,56,993-998.
Here's what they discovered:They found a dopamine receptor gene (DRD) on chromosome 11 and the dopamine transporter gene (DAT1) on chromosme 5.
More studies have been done on this and a variation of the dopamine receptor gene(DRD4) is referred to most frequently.
Another gene (DBH-Taq1) has also been found ,as well as an area that is suspected to be involved (16p13 region). I may not understand all this but I find it exciting , as this is the trail to what causes it. Also, for what it's worth, DBH is the enzyme necessary to get norepinehphrine from dopamine.
Okay, so what the hell did I just post and why is it important? It has to do with the fact that about 80% of ADHD is found to be inherited, while approximately 20-25% is aqcuired thru head injuries mostly or toxins, etc.
The other thing this is important is what exactly is/are the chemical imbalance(s) associated with ADHD and why do meds work? That really leads me to another post on what is called the Biogenic Amine Hypotheses, which Im sure you cant wait to hear..lol. Seriously, if this is too much science geek speak please let me know. The main purpose of posting this is so that you will have as much knowledge as possible in fighting the battle on ADHD.
Lastly. I thought about posting this in What Is ADD/ADHD? but chose this in hopes it would be seen more. I meant no disrespect to veronika and her area. I would love to chat about what she has included there because it is very impressive. You know, the internet gets a bad rap about ADHD info but it must be because the "experts" I've seen and heard don't go to the same places I do.
Take care.
