TEXTTEXT I have finally gotten my DH to understand that our child is just not showing any signs of doing better on his own. We are in the process of finding a dr who can help us. This pass week I have called several places to see about help and where to start. The local psychartrist is too expensive and doesn't take any insurance. I have contacted our local school board to see if they could help evaluated him. They are closing till after the holiday. I contacted my physician to see his suggestions. He suggested the local college has a program that can evaluated him. They can't fit us in till late February. My kid can't wait that long. I am positive he is ADD. Not ADHD. Its been a very hard week. For the last two months, I have been giving him all the Fish oil and magn. and primrose oil, vit e, and a great multi vitamin. I have done everything I think I can do. I need to seek professional help now. His grades have taken a plunge. The teacher and I had a chat this week, we realize his problem in class is that he daydreams so much, he is only writing down only half his notes, he is in the 4th grade. We tried something this week, she sent me a copy of all of his notes, and I studied with him, just like I usually do. The little rat made alot better grades. The teacher said she broke rules, she is not suppose to do this for the children. They need to learn to take their own notes. She catches him 80 % of the time just in la-la land. She knows the signs and suggest that i try to find him help. The school has agreed to help him as much as they can till he sees a DR. I am sorry this is so long, I just have to find some help. I'm not giving up. I'll go out of town if I have too.....Thanks for listening.....HAPPY THANKSGIVING oh,,i heard that getting a child evaluated is a very long process....is this true.......what is involved,,,,,,can someone help.........thanks

Welcome mom, you have come to the right place. Everyone here has been through this. By law the school district has to evaluate your son if you request. they don't always like to tell you this as it costs them money. I am assuming you are in the US. Call the school district and ask them to send you a form. Ask for a comprehensive test. Tell them that you also want suggestions on stratagies of how to teach him. Ask for a meeting with the testers, you, his teacher and principle all together. You are the head of this commity. They are giving you info and suggestions. What you do with this info is up to you. You make all decisions about your child. Sometimes you have to wear the witches hat but I gaurentee you that you will become very assertive. You are the only one that can do this for your child. Good luck and God Bless, Sue

You might also check you health insurance. A lot of them will pay for evaluation for adhd. Ourss did and we went to a psychologist.

Hi momof2boys, My son was diagnosed a few months ago. I think way back in our minds we thought ADHD but never did anything. When my youngest son was born this year my oldest who is 5 started acting up more. He started peeing on things , hitting the baby , and was completely defiant (he was before). I had lost it so I made an appt. We had a questionare about family history, prenatal care, and behavior to fill out. We talked with the dr, he was a child beavior specialist. He talked about physical characteristics and looked for them. There are ten. I cant name them all but a few are 1. night sweats 2. Double cowlick or crown on the back of head 3. bullseye shaped fingerprints 4. irritated by tags or socks not on straight 5. crooked fingers He gave us 2 other behavior questionares to take home and complete. He wanted both done by both of us. The one form was a standard form for testing and the other was a form from them. We had an appointment to come back in a month. They scored our sheets by our answers and the results came back 99%. My ds is adhd predominantly hyperactive/impulsive. We knew that is what he had then. We felt that we did not need any further testing. Once we knew I cried and was also relieved to know why he was acting like this. We tried focalin and did not see results. Then we tried concerta and have seen results but are trying to get the right dosage. Good Luck and keep us posted !

I've never heard of this. Are these supposed to be physical characteristics of people with ADHD? I have the biggest double cowlick you ever saw, and I don't have ADHD. (That I am aware of, and I don't think I am in denial.) ;D Just wondering if you could provide any more details on this.

Hi Dad2Brooke, Since ADHD is genetic there are physical characteristics than you can see. This is what the doctor told us. I did do a poll on Millermoms website and majority have the same characteristics. Anyway, I posted a few that I could remember off the top of my head. I have 8 bullseye fingerprints, and crooked fingers and I dont have ADHD. I think that these are common characteristics among our ADHD kids. I was thinking of starting a post about it but will have to do it after karate.
