My name is Cheri (momofautistic) I have a 7 yr old son that was diagnossed with autistic spectrum disorder & ODD at the age of 4 which took several visits through the steps of diagnossing autism and now my 5 yr old who just started kindergarden is suspected of being ADHD and i was wondering what the process is for diagnossing ADHD and if it is as complex as diagnossing autism? I also want to say to the site owner and moderators you all have done a really good job with this site. I also have a proboards site for autism but its not nearly this active. I would like to recomend this site to members of my site for any ADHD related matters and would love for you to check out my site and refer it to members with autism related matters. Thanks Cheri momofautistic.proboards30.com/

momofautistic I will probably go check out your site also! My sd is autistic but at this point it is only according to the school... A few dr's have seen possible autistic tendancies but none have " Diagnosed" her outright with autism... So we really dont know where we are at in that process!! We however DO know that she is ADHHHHHHHD (oh looky there the H apparently is stuck! ;D kidding I was purposefully stressing the hyperness of her adhd)... So anyway in answer to your question on weather or not ADHD is a complex to diagnoss as autism, I dont know... Since we havent really been through a diagnosis for the autism... I do know the ADHD is an observation diagnosis... The have questionairs parents/teachers etc answer the questions according to behaviors they see in the child... Then the child is rated on the answers, shows weather child is ADD, mild add, moderate adhd etc... Look around and check things out! I hope to see many more posts from you... cat

and welcome! The evaluation depends a lot on the individual doctor. From what I've read the best evaluations involve questionnaires filled out by a parent, teacher, and possibly the child himself (although yours would be a little young for that). A history should also be taken to determine if there are any other underlying factors, and a thorough physical exam should be given to rule out hearing or vision problems or other such things. Besides these my son also had a continuous performance test, which is a computer test which checks for hyperactivity, distractability, and impulsivity.
