HI Everyone,
I hope to get to know you all soon. We finally received our 11 yr old son's ADHD diagnosis on Tuesday, after wondering if he was bipolar, but also having him been previously diagnosed with Oppositional defiance Disorder.
It's been a hectic week, and DJ (our son) has picked up one of the viral bugs floating around - so he has been both home and at school, just seems kind of worn out. No temp but complains of either a headache, sore throat, and/or stomach ache.
We will be meetign with the school on Tuesday next week to start to set up a plan (I hope) of reducing his 6th grade homework. He is an intelligent/manipulative young man, but has difficulty with putting written expression into form.
I myself, deal with chronic hip bursitis, so there are times when I am the inconsistent one in letting him get his way, otherwise, I usually hold him accountable. Anyway, we have a family winter getaway this weekend that is essentially all paid for, so we'll be leaving in a few hours and I have yet to pack.
I look forward to hearing and meeting you. Hope you have a chat room somewhere - please let me know.
Thanks, Rainbow

Hi Rainbow! Welcome to our online family!! I'm Christy... mother of Cami.... the 13 year old Drama Queen. Nice to meet you.
I'm glad you found a dx for your son. That is the first step to getting him the help needed, and sounds like you've already got one of the next steps scheduled... meeting with teachers.
I cannot lie, it's a rough road to travel, but when you as a parent stay on top of things and advocate for your child, then you will get places.
When you get back from your trip, look around here and read up. We have a wealth of info on this board and there isn't anything that hasn't already been asked before... so don't be shy in asking yourself. There is always someone here who has been where you are now, or is there right now.
Is your son middle school? If so, I highly recommend getting hiom a 504 in place as soon as possible. This helps much with those pivoital middle school years.
Again, nice to meet ya! Hope to see you around.

hi rainbow, welcome to our forum family!!! we are very glad you have found us!! as the others have said, getting the right dx is half the battle. my ds9 is bipolar/adhd. is your ds's dx only adhd or are they also concerned about a mood disorder? i ask b/c my ds was dx'ed as odd before the bp dx. kids w/ mood disorders tend not to do well on stimulants, so i wanted to warn you about that. it makes the behaviors worse. we have all been where you are now and are here for you. enjoy your family vacation and visit us often when you return!

Thanks Everyone for your Welcome, Amsmom (hope I'm doing this right, for the last response, you mentioned your child's mixed dx of both the bipolar/adhd. We are well-aware of concerns for stimulants because we had a horrible experience when DJ was on Strattera over a weekend. So needless to say we will stay away from that, and in meeting with his psychiatrist in 2 weeks, will be curious to see what she tries. Does this forum have a chat room? Or do you simply exchange IM addresses and chat that way? Just wondering. Thanks again for your warm welcome. Rainbow

Hi Rainbow Welcome to the forum. I also have an 11 yr old son. Mine is adhd/add and dysgraphic. When you go for the 504 keep in mind that if he has trouble putting thought to paper being allowed to type instead of write can be a God send. Jared has a quick pad that he takes from class to class and it has made a world of difference with the problems of getting his thoughts to paper as the machine can keep up with his brain where his handwriting couldn't . Hope you enjoyed your weekend. I have an IM but I have to rely on people Linda and Anne about how to use those things..as for chat rooms I wouldn't know how anyway. These ladies on this site are some of the best so stick around and they will make your life better. Have a good one... Mothercat (Odie)
