New one here. I will most likely bend an ear for awhile. I have been looking for people to talk to that have some of the same problems that i have with my 1st grader.(stepdaughter)
She was diag after kindergaten and has only gotten worse. I had to push her father to have her diag., it took some talking but she is now on Adderall 20 SR, but it only seems to work sometimes. The school still says she has a lot of problems focusing but some days they say that she tries real hard. The teacher has also mentioned that she notices some OCD. She is really struggling in math. The class room has an Instrucional aide that has to work closely with her in following directions and MATH.
We have started with counseling but have not seen the psyciatrist yet.
We are at the end of our rope with the behavior and I have gone to the school for an IEP testing meeting, now I am waiting to hear from them.
Real mom is so far behind in child support that she does not even call, eccept at Christmas time. So that does not help anything.
Well Iguess that is enough for now.

Welcome aboard! I have a sd (stepdaughter) also, who is adhd, among other things...
What types of behavior are you dealing with? Is it impulsive or aggressive? Or just plain ole defiance? In my situation we have been through all of those, finally making some head way I do believe...
In councelling for sd, we were taught how to talk to sd about the choices she makes... For example sd hits someone we ask sd if that was a "good choice"...
Dont let the school stall too long on the IEP, your sd needs any accomodations they can do for her... It will be VERY overwhelming, and possibly intimidating for you... I remember the first one, there were 8 people in there, and we only knew 3 of them! They were throwing around all these ackronyms that we didnt have a clue what they meant... So educate yourself a bit first, here and else where on the net, so you can know what they mean when/if they say CI (cognitive impaired) or whatever impairment they come off with... Of course you could be fortunate and only be dealing with adhd, I just mean to explain what it was like in my sd IEP meeting...
Are you sure the medication is adderall 20 sr? I ask because I havent heard of the sr, but my sd is on xr (extended release), is that what your sd is on?
Good luck and welcome again! I hope you like it here!

Welcome home TJtater, I hope that you find some answers here for you. We have so many families tha I know you will find some type of help. If all else, come here to vent. That's what I like about being here, Go around to the other section of the board and ask away. I have already asked all of the stupid questions, so you have none. I hope you find us helpful to use for day to day or minute to minute. Welcome again. KAITI

Hi tjtater! Welcome! Have you put your request for testing in writing? I also recommend you read up on IEPs and special ed. accomodations at www.schwablearning.org and www.wrightslaw.com . There is a lot to know and it really can be quite overwhelming. Their testing is not always very thorough, and may not give you the whole picture.

Thanks for the welcome!!! since I was last here they have increased the med to Adderall 25mg xr (my ritalin is SR for narcolepsy).
My sd is more impulsive than aggressive, the teacher has also noticed some OCD things.
I had held her out of kindergarten until she would be 6 because she is behind in the maturity stage, she has a late b-day so i could get away with holding her a year. I think it would have been worse on her and us if I would have sent her to school a year before I did.
She also has the petite mal seizures and is on Depokote for that. She has some severe mood swings to. I think a lot of things has to do with the unstable life she had for the first three years of her life. Now that she feels stable it all starts to come out. Dad and I are really stressed out with all the problems with the behavior and it causes some tension with our relationship but I am tring so hard to get her straightened out.
This am we started with the timer to get her up and moving in the morning (beat the timer game) it might work for a week or so before it gets old with her. It did work this am--a record of 7 min to get dressed and brush her hair!!!!a miracle here.
Well I guess that is enough for now Thanks again
Tara

Hi Tara. RE "I am tring so hard to get her straightened out. " I think that parents like us are heroes for what we do. I have worked with all the same issues that you are facing -- all of them -- and, you know, the child can end up being a beautiful and loving person in the end. It takes so much hard work and fatigue, but it does happen. Good going. 7 minutes is great!!!

Hello Tara and welcome I think you´ve come to the right place, lot´s of experience of anything you can think of living with adhd Lot´s of support and a great place for venting. Take a try. For you being tired of..... I know, been there done that It get´so frustrated sometime´s, feel´s like crying or hitting the wall, but then.... there are some reallygreat day´s that make you think that live is good And looking under the behaviour and lack of concentrating and all that stuff... If I look deep enough, I´ll find a lovely, intelligent boy in there (ds9) I just have to keep thinking that time will ease it in this occation, it will... mayby not soon enough, but it will Btw 7 minut´s; that´s just great

Thank you everyone for the encouragement. The timer did not work the second am. Then Friday she came home with a nasty cold and has a cough, runny nose and a red eye, her colds always go to her eyes. The worse thing is I can't give her anything but Claritin because of the meds she takes. The pharmacist could not recomend anything.
So I guess I call the doctor in the am.
I am so glad I found this site because he won't talk about it, except to complain.
Thanks again!!!! Tara

Hi Tara, I hope she's feeling better soon. Anyhow, my daughter's name is Tara. Such a lovely name. Just wondering, how is her diet? When we first adjusted Mikey's diet as per Feingold Program, he had such a dramatic change. www.feingold.orgI can tell you what he ate and approximately how long ago if he starts acting up.

She is a veg and fruit eater mostly. Meats sometimes, usually she tries to get away with not eating the meats. Sometimes I think it is the age but I don't know any more what to think. I just wish we could get her straight. She is just driving me NUTS!!!
Well enough for tonight talk to you later.

My kids go through their phases, heck for that matter I do too, as long as it's healthy, I wouldn't be too worried, except make sure that she is getting enough iron. I know that if I get too tired all the time, my iron is low, so I try to increase either red meat or white meat, you could try nuts, as long as there is no allergy there.
