Hi everyone! I'm mom to a sweet 4yo who can't sit still for 1 min. At perschool he has decided to knock kids over & even bit one boy. Most of his behavior is unprevoked. We decided to see a psychologist(at the urging of the school). What can I expect to hear? TEXT

Hi tiredmom, and welcome. This is a wonderful place for support and advice, so we're glad you found us. If the process you go through at the psychologist is like what we went through when my Challenge Boy was 8, then the first thing you can expect is for your son to undergo some testing. Part of that testing will probably be filling out questionnaires -- parents and teachers will have to do this. Then there will be some psychological tests for your son. And the psychologist ought to take a detailed personal history of your son from you. From all of this he/she will form a diagnosis and then a treatment plan. Despite the fact that your son's difficulties at school appear to be behavioral/psychological in origin, I'd urge you to take him to his medical doctor as well. A number of easy to treat conditions can cause hyper behavior -- things like anemia or hyperthyroid. Finally , a recent large-scale study of pre-school age children found that artificial colors and other food additives made even the normal ones hyper. You might want to look at information on the Feingold diet at www.feingold.org This has been amazingly successful in controlling my son's acting-out type behaviors. And it's one of the few treatments that is entirely safe for a 4-year-old.
