Hi everyone, my name is Jen and my son is Jacob. he is diagnose as ADHD and suffering from depression. At this moment he is in respite care as we needed a break from each other. He takes 75mg of Zoloft 15mg of adderall and 7.5mg of remeron. He sees a psychiatrist and a therapist plus he is just beginning occupational therapy. he is coming home from the respite care tomorrow and my husband and I need to set up some house rules. Any suggestions would be appreciated as right now we are feeling a little overwhelmed. Thank you, Jen

Hi Jen Welcome home! To you and your son. I hope you find our family here helpful. I suggest lots of reading time here. Consistency is the key. Pick your battles, don't let stupid rules get in the way. Decide on a few SERIOUS things that need changed and implement them one or two at a time. Define what the rule is, define the consequence, and stick to it. Don't punish yourself while teaching him the new rules. A lot of parents have praised the 1-2-3 Magic program, which has worked great for them and us too. Search through the behavior section here, and education to see the 504 accomodations that work for some of our kids. Welcome home. Hugs to you. You will get through this with a new found love for yourself and your family. Just believe in yourself! Laurie

Welcome home Jen, visit as often as you like. My son Mikey is 7 adhd.
Tridlette and Linda are right on. Consistancey is KEY. It may seem hard at first, but as with any child, young or old, when they have the ground work laid out and know what is expected, you are half way there.
Also picking battles is a big one here too. The way my kids learn and retain best is natural learning. They have gotten cold because I wasn't going to argue with them about wearing a jacket. They have gotten hot when they HAD to wear the new outfit Nanny bought them with long sleeves in 90 degree weather.
Right now they are supposed to be cleaning their rooms. I know they aren't, BUT THEY also know that if they want to go to a friends house, their room has to be clean, that leaves it to them, if they want it bad enough.
Oh look, rambling already. Look around, if you have a question, there will be someone here that can help you.
Take Care, Kaiti

Jen, welcome to the forums. We are so glad you are here. I agree with the other members...picking your battles and being consistent is key. Another good book is The Explosive Child by Dr Ross Greene. He tells you how to go about picking your battles, determining which issues are worth battling about and which are not. It can save you a lot of grief. I know it must be hard with 2 other little ones to worry about. Come back often, we are always here to listen and give each other support.

Hi Jen and welcome! You´ve already got really good adwice´s, so I wont repeat them ;D
I have 9y old son too w/adhd and two little sister´s for him. i think the main thing is, that when you greate the houserule´s, it´s same for everyone, avoid jelousy and get´s the picture clear for everyone. When you choose rule´s you want to be honored, then stik to those untill they get them right.
We have lot´s of good post´s in here, go to take a look!
