Hi! I have a 10 year old daughter with ADD. Shes a wonderful child; funny as all get out, LOVES animals, and makes friends easily. She has SOOOO much trouble with school though She also has dyscalculia, which is a math LD. Going into 4th grade this year, she still doesn't have her math facts down. I'm so afraid she's gonna keep falling behind. She goes to a private Lutheran school so there is no IEP. We've been very lucky so far though; they have been quite willing to work with her. I'm a computer-junkie so I look EVERYthing about ADD up & send every scrap of relevent info to her teachers! She takes Strattera & so far, so good. She seems to focus somewhat better & the hand flapping thing she used to do has dissappeared. I see more moodiness now though. Her emotions seem to come too the surface quicker than they used too. Also, she has begun getting headaches severe enough to interfere with play. This is a pretty recent development, so I'm not sure if its the Strattera or not. She takes therapy once a week to help her control her emotions & the overseeing psychiatrist sees her bi-monthly & also prescribes the meds. Her pediatrician didn't seem to know enough about ADD to make me feel comfortable having him do the prescribing. Well, Thats all I can think of at the moment. Anything else you want to know, just ask! I love my daughter dearly & just want the best for her. She has potential to make a difference in the world & I want to see it happen! ;D

I also have a daughter going into 4th grade, so far her only problem is her mouth ::)She has no dx, but my son on the other hand is adhd, heavy on the hyper, not bad, just hyper.
Come back often, there is alot of support here and links that you might be able to use for your little girl.
Have a great Day Kaiti

I can really relate to what you posted. I strongly feel that I have some form of dyscalculia as I understand math but was never able to memorize basic addition or multiplication. I knew how to do it but just couldn't memorize it. To this day I still have a lot of trouble recalling memory of things like phone #'s. If the recall is automatic I can do it but if I had to think about it I usually end up getting the numbers mixed up and all wrong. I'm only able to remember pin #'s by visualizing number pad (the way the phone is set up) and remembering the position of my fingers to type in the pin #. Even though I use that number every week I often lose the memory of it and have to visual to figure out what it is.
What I'm saying is that dyscalculia is a very real thing. I tried all the way through middle school to memorize those multiplication tables on my own but could never keep the memories straight in my mind. Believe me that if a child fails in math that sense of failure can spill over into ever other aspect of their life. Do whatever you have to do to make sure your child gets the chance to learn a be successful. Ignore people who complain about the use of calculators. Humans are intelligent and adaptable which is why we have calculators to overcome some of these difficulties.
Also I would caution you to watch for symptoms of anger and aggression with the Straterra. I have reason to believe both stimulants and the Straterra as well caused my daughter to experience more extreme anger and act out with physical aggressive behavior. Her behavior has improved since we've taken her off the Straterra. She has gone back to acting more silly and a little hyper rather than aggressive. She had worsed to the point of mild physical attacks on me while on the Straterra (shoving me or spitting at me for instance).

Welcome aboard from another PA mom! Montgomery County here!
My DH 13, going into 9th grade, had to stop taking Straterra because of debilatating migraines. But the good news is that it seemed to have a permanent positive effect on him. He has been more even tempered ever since he quit taking it in October, no more headaches, and just somewhat more appropriate all around, except he still refuses to do homework.
I think you will enjoy our forums, we have a lighter side and a very helpful knowledgable bunch of parents and young ADDults.

;D Thanks, everyone for such a warm welcome! I, too am thinking about taking my daughter off the Straterra. Last night she was again complaining of a headache. They seem to come at night alot. She never used to have headaches! Its such a hard decision to make though! I don't want her to lose the positive benefits of the med. but she should not have headaches every other day either! BTW, tridlette, I'm in Allegeny County.

Hi mistymorning and welcome to the forums.
You login name reminds me of that song lyric:
"In the mistry moonlight, by the sacred firelight, any time is all right as long as you are there"
I wonder who sang that. Dean Martin maybe.
